Let's #BuyTwitter and #BanTrump
Donald Trump has done a lot of horrible things on Twitter. From emboldening white supremacists to promoting violence against journalists, his tweets damage the country and put people in harm's way. But threatening actual nuclear war with North Korea takes it to a dangerous new level.
It’s time to shut him down. The bad news is Twitter has ignored growing calls to enforce their own community standards and delete Trump's account. The good news is we can make that decision for them.
Twitter is a publicly traded company. Shares = power. This GoFundMe will fund the purchase of a controlling interest in Twitter. At the current market rate that would require over a billion dollars — but that's a small price to pay to take away Trump's most powerful megaphone and prevent a horrific nuclear war.
Tweets like this are heard around the world. As he uses his biggest platform to escalate the crisis, this could all-too-easily spark a military confrontation that goes nuclear. John Oliver summed this up perfectly:
"We’ve become accustomed to discounting a large percentage of what comes out of Trump’s face. But North Korea is listening to what he says. And the people there have been primed for decades to believe America is primed for invasion."
And remember: As commander-in-chief Trump has absolute authority to make good on these threats. The nuclear briefcase follows him everywhere. He can pick up the phone at any moment he can pick and order a nuclear strike. That's why the world takes his words so seriously.
There’s a real danger that Trump’s tweets could actually start a nuclear war. Let’s delete his account before that happens.
Trump has fully weaponized Twitter: it’s not something that just happens “online.” Time and again his use of this huge global platform has major consequences in the real world. With a single tweet, he can damage international relationships and alliances, spread fake news like a virus, embolden white supremacists to march in the streets, or send stock markets crashing or soaring.
Do we want to find out if his tweets can put nuclear missiles in the air, too?
Trump has already brought us closer to nuclear war than any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis. We can’t take Trump's nukes away (yet!), but we can take away his biggest megaphone and stop him from tweeting armageddon.
Let's #BuyTwitter and delete Trump's account before he starts a nuclear war with it. The whole world will thank us when we do!
If we hit this goal, we’ll use it to become Twitter’s single biggest shareholder and leverage that position to enforce its rules against violent threats, intimidation and hate speech — and shut down Trump for good. If we don’t hit that target but raise a lot of money along the way, we’ll explore options to put forward a strong proposal at the next annual shareholder meeting, use this demonstration of public support to pressure Twitter to take action, and donate 100% of the proceeds to Global Zero, a nonprofit organization leading the resistance to nuclear war.
No matter what, I won't keep a penny of these funds or benefit financially in any way.
My hope is that we can hit $100,000 in the next several days. Reaching that 6-figure milestone so quickly will send a signal to the top dogs at Twitter that this idea is catching on.
To help us hit that goal, can you get this on Trevor Noah’s radar? He's a thoughtful and trusted voice who hasn't shied away from criticizing Trump's dangerous antics — and getting his attention on this campaign would be a big win.

In the meantime, I’ll keep working to enlist more people with big platforms to help spread the word. I’m thrilled to report that the one-and-only Mark Hamill gave his support over the weekend.
Truly, the Force is with us!
P.S. — If you’re game to tweet just a few other show hosts and writers, that would really help! If we can get them on board, we'll reach a whole lot of new people.

Thank you all SO much. Every contribution makes a difference and this would not have been possible without you. Let’s keep this amazing momentum going by sharing this page on Facebook and Twitter and asking our friends to get involved.
I know a billion dollars may sound like a long shot. If we hit this goal, we’ll use it to become Twitter’s single biggest shareholder and leverage that position to enforce its rules against violent threats, intimidation and hate speech. If we don’t hit that target but raise a lot of money along the way, we’ll use that demonstration of public support to pressure Twitter to take action against Trump — and the money raised will go to Global Zero’s campaign to prevent nuclear war. And that’s the ultimate objective here: averting nuclear war.
From USA Today to Teen Vogue, to Newsweek, NowThis and The New York Times, this campaign has really struck a chord. We’ve powerfully put Twitter executives on notice that if they refuse to enforce their community standards, we’ll step in and do it for them.
We're also drawing new attention to just how easily the North Korea crisis could escalate, and how dangerous Trump’s tweets really are.
I’m in it to win it. Let’s keep at it!

We’ve also struck a nerve at the White House. Trump's press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, responded to the campaign yesterday, calling it a “ridiculous attempt to shut down [Trump’s] First Amendment.” She went on to suggest that yesterday’s level of funding proved the American people actually like Trump’s use of Twitter.
To that I say: Challenge accepted!
(I would also add: Go read the Constitution, Sarah. The First Amendment protects the people from the government, not the other way around.)
Now that we know Team Trump is watching this closely, I want to make sure they get the message. Let’s dial up the pressure on Twitter to give Trump the boot before he does any more damage.
Since yesterday, we’ve raised a steady $1,500 every hour, and new donors are rolling in every minute. That tells me people are hungry for hope and this is a glimmer — a reminder of the power we have at a moment so many of us mistake ourselves as powerless.
We’re on to something big. Please keep sharing the GoFundMe page on Facebook and Twitter — and post these great articles, too!
Let’s do this! ✊✊✊
We're only a few days in and this effort is already getting traction on social media and in the press. Please check out and share this great coverage in USA TODAY:
When John Oliver jokes about how we “never imagined the invention of Twitter would lead us to the brink of nuclear armageddon," we can all have a good chuckle. But the people who understand how crises escalate aren't laughing very hard. An American president's words matter. Whether it’s Trump improvising at a press conference or manically tweeting at 2AM, the world is always listening. Some people may think Americans can afford to "take him seriously, not literally," but after many years working as a CIA operative, I can tell you that no other government on the planet has that luxury. Least of all the North Koreans.
My hope in setting up this page was to shine a spotlight on just how dangerous Donald Trump's use of Twitter really is. I wanted to reach new audiences and show them they don't have to sit by while the Donald Trump uses this huge platform to undermine not just the moral fabric of this country, but our national security as well. This isn’t about suppressing free speech online. It’s about taking a stand against reckless bravado and threats of nuclear violence that could have horrific consequences in the real world.
I also wanted to raise some funds for a critically important cause I care deeply about: preventing the catastrophic use of nuclear weapons.
Thanks to you, we’re off to an amazing start! We’ve raised nearly $6,000 from over a 120 donors, and have reached tens of thousands of people through social media and the press. This wouldn't have been possible without your enthusiasm, generosity and support.
We have a long way to go to reach our ambitious $1b goal, but don’t worry! All proceeds will be donated to Global Zero, an incredible charitable organization I’m so proud to support. I won’t be keeping a penny of these funds personally. Instead, all donations will be put toward organizing the public against nuclear war and stopping Trump’s dangerous escalation of the North Korea crisis — before it's too late.
I'll keep you all posted as this campaign progresses. In the meantime, thank you all so much for chipping in and spreading the word.
Let’s keep at it!
