A World Without Bullying: #Bullying20YearsLater

In 1999, the United States launched a critical conversation about the need to prevent bullying. As we mark 20 years since this conversation began, its important to reflect on just how far we have come but also recognize how far we have to go. In recent years, we have seen significant reductions in the number of students reporting being bullied and increased attention to the issue from schools, policymakers, and celebrities.

But, it isn't all good news. These gains are under threat: in the last two years, principals and other stakeholders are reporting increases in hate speech and bullying in their hallways. Policymakers are looking to pass new legislation that enact criminal penalties for bullying behavior, despite evidence suggesting such efforts may further harm youth. 

Schools, policymakers, and others need a trusted resource to help translate the evidence base, connect with researchers, and promote best practice to effectively prevent and intervene in bullying. The International Bullying Prevention Association uniquely plays that role.
