DFH-Building a Sustainable Future in the Himalayas

Donation protected
Did you know that earlier this year someone carried an oven to the top of the Himalayas and then just left it there?

Littering  is increasingly common in the Himalayas, but this is a unique opportunity for you to get involved in a more sustainable form of tourism in Nepal.

Let’s act now before it is too late!

Help Tshring Tashi Lama and his remote Himalayan community create a sustainable future for themselves.  A future built on their own terms, and in a way that protects the local environment and culture.

Tshring’s village community in north-eastern Nepal recently vetoed pushing a road through the Ghunsa Valley to the Tibet/China border – despite the material benefits the road could bring.

They did this because the cost to the eco-system and their own way of life was just too high. The valley is currently untouched by development, and is home to endangered species like snow leopard and red panda.

But the people of Ghunsa desperately want a secure future with opportunities for younger generations. If the young don't return to the valley after schooling how will they preserve their culture, skills and traditions?

Tshring has a vision. He is turning his family home into an eco-friendly lodge and bakery, which will help create job and training opportunities for others in his community in the Ghunsa Valley. He is passionate about sharing his Tibetan/Nepalese culture and traditions with visitors.

This year Tshring has invested his own savings to make his family home – Dzonga Family House - warm and comfortable for visitors. He is also piloting a small bakery using a sun oven. This is where he is right now - you can check on progress on Facebook  andInstagram : @dzongafamilyhouse.

Tshring is already well underway working on the heart of the project.  But more is needed to create a sustainable business which can operate for many years to come

In order to help Tshring create long-term job and training opportunities for the community in the Ghunsa Valley, we are supporting him in building an 8 bedroom annexe - this is phase 2

We are a group of Nepal enthusiasts, including architects and sustainability experts, who have been inspired by this project.  Working on a voluntary basis as Five Treasures Project for Dzonga Family House, we are have been helping Tshring with both the planning and designs; and now, we hope you will join us in supporting the installation the phase 2 sustainable solutions

In all this, the emphasis is on using traditional, locally sourced materials complemented by solar solutions and proper insulation.

But please don't take our word for it that this is a special project. Listen to what Tshring himself has to say

Get involved and show Tshring some support!

If you like what you see, please donate!  Every little bit helps

Of the total build cost -circa 70,000€ - we aim to raise 5,000€ through this platform (other fundraising initiatives ongoing elsewhere).
This will be put towards the following sustainable solutions: solar hot water and electricity panels, insulation, double-glazed windows and non-toxic paint.

Work will begin next Spring once the snows have thawed - everything has to be bought and then carried up the mountain by porters!

Tshring is working against the clock so that the lodge can be ready in time for the 2020 Autumn trekking season so please spread the word.

A sincere thank you!

Your contribution will ensure that this community can shape its own future, on its own terms.

Thank you!    Dhanyabhad!    Thuk-je-che!

We are proud to be partnered in this venture by Biovilla  and are very grateful for the pro bono support and legal advice we have also received from Vd'A  .
