The Buffalo Academy of Scholars:
“Help Students. Help Everyone.”

The Buffalo Academy of Scholars is on a mission to improve the high school experience for students, parents, and teachers.

What is The Academy?

We are a private, not-for-profit school in Buffalo, NY, founded in 2013 through the generous financial contributions of a local benefactor. In order to maintain and grow our operations, we rely on support from the local and global communities. Generous donations – large and small – are what enable us to continue helping students in ways that other schools can’t. Please continue reading to learn about the success that students have achieved at the Buffalo Academy of Scholars.

What is “success”?

Success is a term that we allow each student and family to define for themselves. For some students, success means building a schedule that allows them to pursue extracurricular activities, like a small business, a sports team, or travel (sometimes for weeks or months at a time)! For other students, it means learning to function in academic and social settings without a dependence on medication. For still others, success means graduating high school in only 3 years instead of 4. Each student has a different story, a unique background, and a completely personalized definition of success that they and their parents choose for themselves. We’re proud to help our students achieve their goals, and we’re committed to giving every single student the personalized attention they deserve.

What results have we achieved so far?

Here are just a few of the students whose lives have been transformed by The Academy:

William was homeschooled for most of his life because he had several hobbies - plus his own small business - that required large blocks of uninterrupted time. He needed a flexible schedule that a typical school couldn’t accommodate. When he found The Academy, he was delighted by the limitless scheduling options, and he was thrilled to incorporate more positive social relationships into his life. Now his social life, his academics, and his business are healthier than ever before!

Arielle attended a private school for 9th grade, but discovered that the social drama among students was preventing her from reaching her academic goals. When she came to The Academy mid-way through 10th grade, her social challenges became social opportunities; she loves the inclusive atmosphere at The Academy, as well as the freedom to take classes as fast or as slow as she likes. She’ll graduate from high school a year early, thanks to her hard work, dedication, and fantastic network of supportive friends.

Ricky attended his local public school for middle school and the start of high school, but he spent most of these years in a state of depression. Not wanting to attend school, and failing to see “the point” of it, he nearly dropped out completely. He found The Academy in the nick of time, and spent his last two years of high school with us, and now he loves the academic and social environment so much that he’s decided to volunteer his time here as a mentor for other students, even though he’s already earned his diploma! He plans to attend college and start his own business next year! The dramatic turnaround is nothing short of miraculous, and we’re eager to do the same for as many other young people as possible.

How do we achieve such dramatic results?

Think about your own time in school: who or what had the greatest impact on your life? The most common answer is “the people” – the friends, the teachers, the relationships that you formed with people who care about you. We believe that relationships are more important than curriculum, and we always put the human element before everything else. Before we start the day’s lesson, we ensure that all students and teachers are ready to learn. Is everything okay at home? Are you feeling well and excited to be here? If not, let’s pause and talk to each other. Let’s solve your personal problems before we begin discussing the academics. When you genuinely care about someone’s emotional well-being, the bonds you form – with students and with teachers – are stronger and deeper than you’ll find anywhere else, and in the long run, everyone will achieve greater academic, emotional, and financial success than they previously thought possible.

Where does my donation go?

We are SO PROUD to say that 100% of every dollar we receive goes directly to benefit the students. How is this possible? All of our administrative personnel, including the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, are unpaid volunteers, so we have no administrative costs. Each dollar donated will be used for one or more of the following purposes: (1) subsidize tuition costs for the underprivileged families who cannot afford tuition ($25,000), (2) purchase books and materials for students, including art, music, and science equipment ($5,500), and (3) pay for field trips to exciting and educational destinations like Niagara Falls, The Buffalo Science Museum, Becker Farms, The Albright Knox Art Gallery, and The Buffalo Zoo ($1,700).

How can I help?

If you share our belief that every child deserves a customized learning environment to help him or her achieve success, and if you’d like to help us continue to Help Students Help Everyone, then please consider giving at one of the following levels:

Popular Level: $10 or more

Scholar Level: $100 or more

Leadership Level: $1,000 or more

Keystone Level: $10,000 or more

Legacy Level: $100,000 or more

Thank you so much for your generosity and your support! All of our community members - students, parents, teachers, and administrators - are so grateful for all the contributions that you make. Your donations empower us to continue our mission to Help Students Help Everyone.
