My name is Dr. Lametra Scott, resident of Nashville, TN. I have recently been granted approval by the state for starting a nonprofit organization BREAKING THE SSICKLE CELL CYCLE FOUNDATION, Inc. that focuses on promoting education and awareness of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) ( also referred to as Sickle Cell Anemia) within our community. As a practicing pharmacist within the healthcare community ,this mission is personal to me because I have a son with SCD and I have encountered many people from medical providers to members of the the general community who are not well informed of this potentially debilitating disease.
Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. People with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that contain mostly hemoglobin* S, an abnormal type of hemoglobin. Sometimes these red blood cells become sickle-shaped (crescent shaped) and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels.
When sickle-shaped cells block small blood vessels, less blood can each that part of the body. This can cause pain and other serious problems such infection, acute chest syndrome and stroke. Tissue that does not receive a normal blood flow eventually becomes damaged. This is what causes the complications of sickle cell disease. There is currently no universal cure for sickle cell disease.
I would like to have my first fundraising event to raise awareness for Sickle Cell Disease this month and ultimately host awareness events that bring attention to this debilitating disease on a regular basis not just during "Sickle Cell Awareness" month. Sickle Cell Warriors, like my son, have to battle this disease EVERYDAY. The more we can increase awareness and provide education on how to prevent SCD and educate others who are affected by it on how to adopt healthy lifestyles to help manage their disease, we contribute to the process of Breaking the SSickle Cell Cycle!!
