BrokenHealthcare.org is fighting to end the secrecy in medical billing. Since being recognized in the Wall Street Journal last week, I've heard from people in Washington, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Massachusetts, Nevada, Florida, Ohio and Illinois. They've all asking the same question: can you help us change the law in our state.
Numerous government and private foundation reports attribute the increasing cost of healthcare to one thing: skyrocketing prices . We are not spending more on healthcare because we are more sick. It's not because we're making more trips to the doctor or are taking more medications. It's because prices are rising uncontrollably, unchecked by the forces of the marketplace.
Healthcare is the only market in which we do not know the price of services before hand. And even after the fact, the complex combination of discounts and payments from a multi-payer system that includes patients, employers and insurance companies makes it impossible for anyone to ever know the total price being paid for services. But there is a solution....
Total price transparency is possible. And the only thing standing in its way is the entrenched interests of the largest industry on the planet: the American hospital and health insurance industry.
BrokenHealthcare.org helps patients deny payment to providers that not transparent. It's an aggressive approach to a problem that's gone unchecked for too long. BrokenHealthcare.org also educates and supports efforts to change the law, one state at a time, because the U.S. Congress has become too dependent on big money to ever take care of this at the national level. Right now we are supporting a legislative effort to impose transparency on the healthcare system in Colorado that will be the model for the rest of the country, because you know what they say: "What happens in Colorado doesn't stay in Colorado."
