Brittney Gates Fire Recovery Fund

$12,194 of $20,000 goal

Raised by 133 people in 13 months
Created April 27, 2018
On the evening of April 27, 2018, Brittney Gates, a single mother of three and army veteran, lost all her worldly possessions, including her beloved cat ("Cat") in an apartment fire. Just hours earlier, she had moved into this very apartment on Roosevelt Island. What was supposed to be a joyous day, marking a new beginning in a new home for Brittney and her family, turned to a horrific tragedy

Brittney is a courageous, self-reliant woman, who is not quick to ask for help. This is not about her asking for help but about us coming together to focus on solutions so that she and her children can rebuild their lives.

No words can help heal broken hearts in a tragedy like this, but our joint efforts can! While no amount of money can compensate for the loss of her family member, “Cat”, it can help her to kick off a new beginning for her family.

Please keep Brittney and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Any donation is appreciated.

Can you imagine picking your kids up to take to their new home, and while you’re stuck in traffic, you can see the firemen entering your apartment from the window? Brittney did just this and kept the news from her kids as long as she could to not upset them.

We’re almost at 50% towards our goal and Brittney is preparing to move into her new home. Please continue to do all you can to support Brittney and her family. Your donations are still very much appreciated.

Wow! You guys, rock! Brittney and her kids are completely floored with the support, love, and generosity of all who have helped. Collectively, we've lifted a massive weight off of her shoulders. A special thank you to our BuildingLink family, who has stepped up in such an amazing way.

Quick update: After working with the building's management company, Brittney is close to settling into her new home in another unit. She could finally be "home" before the end of the week.

Of course, we still need more donations! With Brittney likely moving in soon, she'll have a lot of shopping to do to replace everything she's lost: beds for her and her three kids, desks, dressers, a couch, kitchen utensils, etc. This is critical timing to reach our goal.

Keep the donations and support coming!

Hi Everyone,

Brittney, Ava, Hayden, and Joshua are safe. They are currently staying in a hotel. They are still processing all the various emotions, but are committed to resuming as much of a normal routine as possible, beginning on Monday.

Saturday was a particularly emotional day for Brittney. The property manager took her up to what would have been her new apartment. It was difficult for her to see her family's belongings charred. Almost nothing is salvageable -- perhaps, only some clothes in the back of the apartment that were soaked with water.

The property management company (where the fire occurred) is being helpful and is working with Brittney to find another available unit as soon as possible. Very soon, Brittney and her children will begin furniture shopping to fill their new home.

Brittney is overwhelmed with gratitude by the love and support that has been demonstrated. This is empowering her to focus on moving forward in a positive light.

Please help us keep up this momentum going!!!!
