Bring Grace Back Home

Donation protected
In October 2016, Grace Mueni was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Patients with ALS gradually lose function of their muscles, which become rigid and stiff, have involuntary twitching, and atrophy. It is a devastating disease for which there is no known cure.

For the past 27 years, Grace has dedicated her life to teaching visually-impaired students at the Thika High School for the Blind in Kenya, East Africa. While primarily a teacher of French, Grace has also been actively involved in teaching her students poetry, drama, and skits for the Kenya National Music Festival. Under her direction, Grace’s students have received accolades and won national awards. In addition to academic pursuits, she has also coached student-athletes in various track and field events, preparing them for competition both in and outside the school. She has not only been a teacher but a mentor and life coach to countless students over so many years.

After her diagnosis, Grace continued to teach until her limbs were totally impaired. Her family sought treatment both locally and abroad but ultimately decided to bring her back home to continue her care.

On August 12, 2017, Grace was hospitalized after she developed difficulty in breathing and has been under intensive care at the hospital ever since. Under her doctor's guidance, the family has chosen to continue providing the intensive care she requires from home rather than in the hospital, due to high and escalating hospital bills. At a rate of $600 to $700 per day, the hospital bill has already exhausted the family’s finances.

Grace’s husband of 24 years, Joseph, and their 22-year-old son, Cedric, are urgently (by 15 December, 2017) seeking to raise $60,000 through friends and well-wishers to pay the hospital bill and to allow Grace to continue receiving intensive care in the comfort and familiarity of home, surrounded by those who love her most. Their need is urgent as Grace requires continuous care.
