Bring Anton Home
Anton Pilipa is a long time anti-poverty activist and member of radical communities in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto. In 2012, during a prolonged struggle with mental health illness, he suddenly disappeared. He was not seen or heard from for nearly 5 years and his family and friends were devastated with worry.
Then, at Christmas 2016 his family received word through social media -- Anton was homeless and wandering the highways and towns of northern Brazil.
Throughout the month of January, Anton's brother Stefan did the work of arranging to bring him home, rounding up identification, a passport, and arranging travel permissions and flights. This work has been very expensive and is straining the resources of this working class family. This is a call out for friends and communities that care about Anton, who have been supported and impacted by his work, to step up and support him. We need financial support to bring him home and to help him settle, recover, and get healthy near his family in Toronto.
The costs of bringing Anton home are high. The cost of his flight is $1600, hospital and consular fees are $2000, and a couple months rent in Toronto will be around $3500. We are also asking for some money to offset the costs of Stefan's last-minute round-trip flight to Brazil, without which Anton could not be coming home.
Please contribute what you can and share this callout with those who know Anton.
I want to thank everyone who gave money. It’s money and it’s a tool to help Anton get settled and have a dignified life. It’s also powerful solidarity and friendship and it has already been such a healing and welcoming force for him. Thank you so much for that part of it too.
Anton is doing well. He’s staying in our home with our family until he’s ready to take the next step. What have we been doing? We took the kids out sledding. We watched O Brother Where Art Thou. We sit down and eat together. Normal, happy things.
Anton is not used to staying still or living inside. He’s quite restless and needs to go for walks. You may see him out walking. Say hi, welcome him back, and if you’re lucky he me let you take him for coffee. Thank you again for all your love and encouragement and positive energy.
We have reached the initial goal of $8,000 in about 12 hours. If you would still like to give please don't hesitate, all additional money will add to the support Anton will need for clothes, food, and furnishings when he arrives home.
Wow!!!! Wish I could donate but I have been off work injured for a while now. However, I just wanted to say I am very blown away by this story and how amazing it is. His journey needs to be documented and journaled as much as possible and maybe a movie made. I sure hope he has some memories of his journey. Sending you prayers and thinking about your family.
Congratulations on completing your journey! I hope to read your book one day.
As someone who works with many people struggling with this illness I was extremely moved by this story. I am wishing your brother and you and your family the peace and healing you have been seeking .
So glad that he is safe! What an amazing story. It sounds like you are doing a great job taking care of Anton. Hope things continue to get better and better. P.S. no pressure, but I would LOVE to read that story if you all wanted to write one! :)
Wish I could run away But happy he is home safe.
Thanks for the update, Stefan. Anton's story is very emotionally gripping. I send much love to him and your entire family.
How'd he eat or drink walking around for 5 years?
