Brighten the Betz's Tomorrows

Hello, my name is Donna Honeycutt.   I love my sisters.  As you know, when a loved one hurts, you hurt as well and want nothing less than to take away their pain.  My sister, Pat, is one of my three surviving sisters. She and her family are hurting and the reason for my plight.

December 28, 2017 was the date the lives of my brother-in-law, Gregory L. Betz and his loving wife of nearly 52 years, Patricia, were abruptly and involuntarily redirected.  Gregg was diagnosed with esophageal varices which are abnormal, enlarged veins in the esophagus and can lead to blood vessel leakage or even rupture, causing life-threatening bleeding.  This condition occurs most often in people with serious liver diseases.  Over the next year, Gregg's health declined.  He was repeatedly either in a doctor's office or the hospital.  His last hospital admission for varices was in October 2018.

This respite ended on December 5, 2018 when Gregg began vomiting blood.  He was admitted to the local hospital intensive care unit and sustained by a ventilator, paralytic, sedatives and other medications.  The roller coaster ride boarded by this man and his family lasted for the next three plus weeks and proved to be the worst ride of their lives.  This experience was excruciating for the family to behold and would have been unbearable had it not been for the loving support and unity of the family.  Gregg's rapidly declining health resulted in his transfer to Riverside Hospital in Columbus, OH.   The prospect of a new team of medical doctors brought renewed hope.  This hope, however, was short lived.  Gregg's struggle continued with intermittent glimmers of false hope.  He became non-responsive.   His heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys were compromised requiring continuous dialysis.   Ultimately, Gregg was diagnosed with Wegener's (GPA) Disease, a very rare condition that causes inflammation of the blood vessels.

Gregg was a high school track athlete and Pat, his high school sweetheart.  He was a mechanic in the Air Force, served in Vietnam and was a dedicated Whirlpool employee until his retirement in 2008.  In 2001, Gregg became passionate about pitching horseshoes.  He was a member of the Marion & Hardin County Horseshoe Club, an accomplished World and Ohio State horseshoe pitching champion, and won the E Class Sr. Men class in Knoxville, TN in 2012.

Gregg's greatest accomplishment and source of pride was his family; his devoted wife, Pat, four children, Lorraine Betz, Geoffrey Betz, Sandra Betz, and Janel Burkhart, eleven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.  If I might choose and stress just one virtue of the Betz family, it would be how amazingly close they are.  Gregg and Pat would exhaust every means available to help their children, even in adulthood.  Likewise, nothing could keep the children away if needed for any reason.

On December 27, 2018, Gregory L. Betz, age 71 of Marion, OH lost his battle with Wegener's (GPA) Disease while surrounded by his loving family.  He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, one brother, Bruce Betz, and one sister, Carolyn Miller.

Through this sudden circumstance, the Betz family incurred the unexpected expense of eating meals out, gasoline costs, hotel bills, astronomical medical bills and final expenses.  Their lives, indeed, have changed forever but their devotion to each other remains as strong as ever.  If you have maintained an inkling of the giving spirit, please brighten the Betz's tomorrows with your gift today.

Thank you in advance!
