Brian's Medical Fund

$269,900 of $500,000 goal

Raised by 1,646 people in 36 months
Brian McKenna, originally from New York, was brought to Salt Lake City by the allure of the mountains and a passion to live life to its fullest. From skiing, hiking, biking, climbing, and any other conceivable outdoor adventure sport, Brian spent his free time enjoying the unique beauty of his surroundings and finding joy in everything that he did. He is known for being a true friend to all and his presence instills happiness in everyone around him.

In June of 2015, Brian suffered a tragic mountain biking accident that left him on ventilator support and paralyzed from the neck down. Despite his long and difficult journey through rehabilitation, Brian has maintained the part of him that people are so drawn to: his unparalleled appreciation of life and a commitment to find beauty everywhere he looks and in every situation. Although his journey is far from over, he will once again return to the mountains that made him feel alive with the TRAILS adaptive sports program at the University of Utah Hospital. In the meantime, Brian continues to require 24-hour caregiver support, adaptive equipment, and other medical needs. Help support him by donating to his cause. Thank you.

This fund raiser is being managed by the parents of Brian McKenna, temporarily residing in Salt Lake City,UT to be with their son.   Funds raised will be used to purchase a wheel chair accessible van and begin to cover the cost of full time professional nursing care in the home. His parents will be using the donated funds to directly cover these expenses.

Sincerely,
- Friends of Brian McKenna

During this time traditionally meant for giving thanks, I am overwhelmed with gratitude to an extent I never imagined possible. Not surprisingly, the last five months have been the most difficult of my life, and I quite literally cannot imagine how they would have gone without help from my friends, my family, and a countless number of the most caring and generous people I have never had the pleasure of meeting. I am honestly humbled by the outpouring of support, whether it be visits, donations, gifts, or just kind words. People often remark about my positive attitude, but it's important to me that all of you realize how much of that comes from you and the support you all provide. It might sound crazy, but I feel as if what I lost in the accident doesn't compare to how much I've gained since then. I am thankful for each and every one of you, and wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Thanksgiving.
With my most sincere appreciation & gratitude,
Brian

WHO DAT!! Tonight's Saints win was the perfect ending to the best week Brian has had in a long time. Spirits were high in Brian's room tonight as we celebrated not only the first win of the season but also the incredible generosity of our friends and family in raising nearly $30,000 this week! While we have so much to be thankful for, we still have a long way to go to reach our goal. Please keep doing the amazing things you've been doing. Spread the word. Give as you are able. Most of all, keep living every day #BrianStrong!

Saw your incredible story on Ellen. It made me wonder if you'd heard of Bridging Bionics in Aspen, CO. Their motto is bringing mobility with bionic technology. If you'd like more info please let me know and I'd be happy to put you in touch. Praying for you and miraculous healing!

Hey Brian, I saw you on Ellen! again. So happy to see your smiling face and to hear youre off the vent! Im a caregiver for my good friend Keith who is also living with a spinal cord injury. His level of injury is an incomplete compression fracture T3/4. He was injured back in 1997. I was at his home when I saw your update on Ellen! and raced to his room to turn the tv on so he could see you and hear your story. We both had tears in our eyes as we watched and listened. Unless you've lived it, its hard to really understand. Your love for life and contagious smile is motivation for other spinal cord survivors and able-bodied people alike. Keep on keepin on dude!
