The Brian Doherty Cancer Care Fund

$27,594 of $25,000 goal

Raised by 406 people in 2 months
Our Big Wreck brother, Brian Doherty, for the past 9 months has been in the fight of his life battling cancer. He is a VERY humble and discreet individual. He had hoped to keep this private but circumstances have changed. We have recently found that his cancer is terminal.

He is loved by the fans for his masterful contributions to Big Wreck these past 21 years. His musical legacy, touring all over the world, sharing his gift of music and musicianship with us all has touched our lives deeply. We now have a chance to give back in a really meaningful way.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music, he has been a wonderful teacher to many guitar students with his dedicated, in-depth and nuanced methods. His down to earth connection with his students is his standard. He has sadly been too weak to teach through much of this process.

In his adopted hometown of Sarnia, he is well known on the local music scene and LOVED for his generosity and caring attitude. Brian is an active member in his AA community. He was also pursuing his rehab counseling degree and an opportunity at Ray of Hope to start a therapeutic music and guidance  support group program to assist those struggling with addiction. He has a heart for those who struggle.

Brian is also a “Big Brother” to a local youth and has spent years of hands-on quality time enriching this young man’s life.

This last nine months have been brutal. The physical effects of the treatment have been devastating. The costs have been overwhelming. To lessen the burden on his family, his Mom in particular, we ask you to donate to someone we would all agree has given us fans, collaborating musicians and community at large so much.

Please donate if you can. Share on your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.

A Thank You message rom Brian:

Sorry for not posting sooner but I’ve been really sick.

As hard as the realization is that this is a terminal condition, there is one bright spot. Through this whole process I have been able to reflect on some of the best moments of my life. I have been blessed with so many things, not the least of which has been being able to use the gift of music, playing in Big Wreck, through whom I have met many wonderful people in so many great places. I realize that even though these experiences are passing, life is still really good.

We have been praying for a miracle from God; for a cure. But a miracle has been all around me from the very start. Many moments along the way have brought me to tears in recognition.

I have people that have wrapped me with a love that is overwhelming. I am so thankful for my “Angel Gang”! Ken D., Al Bettridge, Anita Nethercott, James Anger, Scott Archer, Nina Skowronski, Tim Seeton, Tony, Tina Power Doherty, Ian Thornley, Dave McMillan, Paulo Neta, Chuck Keeping, Glen and Linda Morris and Buk. They have shown me what Godly kindness is truly all about. Sometimes you need to just see God “with skin on” as they say. They clean my apartment, my clothes, buy me meals, transport me and so many other countless things to care for me… more than I deserve.

So through this all I have been very grateful for family and friends and to you the fans. Thank you all for your kindness in words and deeds. Sharing Big Wreck music with you all these years has been my great privilege. Your love and generosity toward me is astounding!

The really hard part, even more than the physical, has been from an emotional perspective. I am grateful for my sobriety. I am not escaping my emotional pain by turning to drink or drugs. My AA program and the people I have met through it have shown me a way to accept death enough to enjoy what is left. Acceptance is the key.

I used to turn to vice to find peace when in stress. I have now found peace in recovery. I have always had faith, but as things got worse, I did not back away from it; I drew closer to God. If anything, it’s a lesson to each and every one of us. Lean in to your faith while you can.

Some of the funds will be put to good use helping defray the costs of alternative treatments to ease the physical pain of these last days. The remaining funds will provide for my Mom and my family in my absence. May God Bless you all and thank you again.

Thank you all so much for expressing your love for Brian! The response has been overwhelming. I know that as much as Brian pushes away compliments he will be bolstered in his journey by all your heartfelt love. We have surpassed our initial goal in less than 24 hours. They say that “A burden shared is a burden halved”. Well you guys have fractioned it all to pieces. Ultimately we all will face this alone, but letting Brian know the love and concern that surrounds him at this time will remind him of the type of life he has sown. You all are a blessing to him as his music was to you. The additional funds will be used for Brian’s end of life care, final needs and family.
