Brian Dalton-Bike Accident

Donation protected
Brian Dalton is an active 67-year old with a passion for cycling, lifting weights, and telling jokes.  In his free time, he enjoys watching sports, helping his two children, and spending time with his close group friends and family.

In an effort to always be helpful, Brian temporarily relocated to Southern California to help his son with a small business.  Last week, the day after Christmas, Brian did what he does every day.  He went out for a short bike ride before sunset.  At 3:30 pm on Wednesday December 26th, at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Upas in San Diego, Brian sprinted through an intersection on his fixed-gear road bike.  Mid-sprint the right crank that connects the pedal to the drive failed.  Brian fell from a height of 6-feet and traumatically landed head and back first on concrete.

As a result of the trauma, Brian was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital a level II trauma center, where it was discovered that he had 9 broken and displaced ribs (ribs 1-8 on the right side and rib 1 on the left side).  In addition to the broken and displaced ribs, Brian suffered a partially collapsed lung from the sharp fractured edges of the rib.  If you know Brian, you know that he never rides his bike without a helmet.  Lucky for him he was wearing his helmet.  When he was admitted to the emergency department a visible bruise imprint from his helmet was apparent on the base of his head indicating that he had hit his head, but that the helmet had done its job.

Brian spent 48 hours at Sharp Memorial before being discharged.  He is now staying at his son’s home for the next 6-12 weeks.  Brian cannot travel to his home to Minnesota for the next 6 weeks because of the punctured lung.  He cannot travel by car because of the displaced ribs.

Since Brian retired from Starkey Laboratories in 2016, his primary source of income has come from part-time bartending at the Orpheum and State Theaters in Minnesota.  He will not be able to go back to work until he is well enough to travel.

In the blink of an eye, Brian’s life changed from that of a strong and independent 67-year-old, to one requiring a lot of help from friends and family.  Brian is not able ride in a car, fly in an airplane, or walk any significant distance. Currently, he is not able to sleep laying down and must spend his time upright in a chair.  Breathing as deeply as possible through the assistance of an incentive spirometer and pain management is his number one priority right now.

Brian could use help to cover medical co-pays and deductibles from the costs incurred by the ambulance transport and time in the hospital and lost wages until he is able to return to work.

Please hold off on phone calls until his lungs recover more.  In the meantime, your thoughts, prayers, and messages are greatly appreciated.  Brian is a selfless man that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.  Thank you for giving anything that you can right now to help him in his time of need.
