Brevins Fight Against Hodgkins Lymphoma

Donation protected
November 26th, 2018 was suppose to be a sick visit at the doctors to address Brevins breathing. We recieved a breathing treatment and an xray was ordered. According to the nurse it appeared Brevins stomach was herniated into his chest.  Our initial thought was Wow, thats strange. We were then sent to MUSC Childrens hospital E.R. Thats when we repeated the symptoms to numerous nurses and doctors.

The Hemotologist Dr. and fellow came in. They had told us they reviewed the xray and wanted to check his lymph nodes and the groin area. It was then immediately the Dr. felt two large lymph nodes in the neck.  I will never forget her reaction. She smiled and stated “this makes me happy” My reaction completly different wondering what in the world. She sat down and I asked if the mass in his chest could be related to the lumps in his neck and she said yes. I asked well what could it be. As softly and calmly she said “CANCER” Every ounce of my being froze and my heart sank. I truly never grasped what she had said.

Moments later we were transported to ICU where Brevin nor I had slept for a few days. Due to the mass being so large he was not able to lay down because it was crushing his wind pipe. He would have to sit in a chair and attempt to sleep with the vapo therm which is humidified oxygen. Our amazing Doctors Dr. Hudspeth and Dr.Diaz  immediately scheduled surgery for lymph node biopsy and bilateral bone marrow biopsy. Countless hours passed I signed papers incase his breathing took a turn for the worst and he was taken into surgery which lasted a few hours. They had nothing but amazing words for my son. Being awake during surgery and under no anesthesia is no easy task all the while he watched Master Chef haha! He was given an epidural for pain and then transported back to ICU... It was then BAM!!!! The results which I had been fearing but deep down I knew.  While he recovered I was walked to the conference room. A very quiet and bright room where moments before the Doctor spoke it was quiet. Dr. Hudspeth said “we have the results, Brevin  has Hodgkins Lymphoma.” There were no words just tears. Our lives were changed in a matter of seconds.  The most heartbreaking of it all is when Brevin said “Ive heard the doctors talking about a mass. Do I have cancer?” As soon as brevin can lay flat on his back he will have CT scan and this will determine what stage.

As a Mother of three ages 14, 11, and 8 life is already overwhelming with work, sports, and school. Brevin will attend Homebound school and return to school in the fall of 2019. He will have countless trips for chemo, labs, and doctors appointments. Many have asked about sending money, gifts, and food. Our greatest expense right now is gas and food while trying to maintain some normalcy for the girls. There will be several days when we wont be able to go to work while we complete treatment which is expected to last 6 months. We don’t normally ask for help but this time we need it. Thank you to everyone for your kind words of support, your love, and your prayers. #brevingold #prayersforbrev #hodgkinslymphoma
