Brecon Sprint Triathlon for Max
On the 9th of August 2018 we lost our dear friend, brother and son Max Davies after a battle with depression. Max was the life and soul of every party, an amazing scrum half in rugby union and the ultimate prankster.
In Max’s honour a group of us are undertook the Brecon sprint triathlon on the 25th of May. This involved a 400m swim, 21km bike ride and a 5km run in hilly Brecon. It was a challenging yet rewarding day for all involved.
Team Maxwell: Nico McCord, Tom Woolley, Lloyd Davies, Lydia Gillibrand, Jack Nuttall, Marcus Perret-Green, Patrick Knight, Tim McCord and Richard McLennan
The aim of this is to raise money for the charity been set up in Max’s name by his loving family ‘The Mindstep Foundation’. Having already smashed our £5000 target we are now looking to raise £6000 .
The charity will seek to raise awareness for clinical depression.
The funds of this event will go towards:
- Funding a research programme into clinical depression. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 and claims the life of 84 men in the UK each week
- Funding towards aftercare for families following the suicide of a loved one
- Holding support groups in sporting clubs to raise awareness and help reduce the stigma. This will seek to encourage men not to just talk to professionals but also to one another
There needs to be more awareness as to how depression can present itself as the symptoms of depression are not always obvious to others - a smiling face can mask intense pain.
Setting up a registered charity up is a very lengthy process. Therefore all donations will temporarily be sent over to the conveyancing foundation to allow gift aid to be attached. Once set up the funds will then be transferred to the ‘The Mindstep Foundation.’
