Help a Woman to Heal - Residential Equine Therapy Program for Breast Cancer Survivors.

Horses have an incredible power to heal. We want to bring all the benefits of Equine Assisted Therapy to support women who are recovering from breast cancer treatment, but have been left  struggling physically and emotionally. This is the first time this groundbreaking program will be offered in Australia.

We want to raise $30,000 launch the first three Equine Therapy Retreats, starting in March 2019.

Run by Equine Encounters Australia, who are nationally recognised for their Trauma Support Programs, we want to offer fully-funded places to women on each of the retreats.

We already have women asking for this therapy  - Here's what just one has said:

“I just KNOW working with animals will help. I love horses and find them incredibly calming. I can imagine how much this would help coming out of treatment.”

At present there is no Government Funding available for therapy programs for Breast Cancer survivors post treatment.

WHY

When women qualify as a statistical survivor of Breast Cancer, they don’t feel like setting off fireworks and having parties.  After weeks and months of excruciating treatments that can rob them of hair, nails, femininity and connection with love ones and friends. Sometimes, barely able to function on a day to day basis due to overwhelming physical and psychological fatigue, there is then a further period whilst they wait in the shadow of a swinging guillotine to learn if they’re clear of the cancer.  However,  society just expects them to go back to their lives like nothing has changed – but they are not the same.  They are left struggling on many levels, including financially

By the end of 2018 it is estimated that throughout the year 18,087 women will have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer, with early detection and treatment, approximately 91% of these will women will thankfully survive.

In the aftermath of their treatment, we want to offer women specialised therapeutic support, on these four-day residential retreat, with other Breast Cancer Survivors.

A Breast Cancer Survivor told us:

“Finishing my treatment was the scariest part of the whole process for me. Suddenly I was on my own, the team of people looking out for me daily had disappeared. I really felt like I had PTSD. “Anything that can help people coming out of treatment to deal with their demons, must have huge benefits.”

HOW

These four-day, fully inclusive, residential programs will be run from a beautiful rural horse property in the Hunter Valley.   Led by fully qualified therapists, the program will offer a range of gentle therapeutic activities, based around Equine Assisted Therapy.

Each program will be limited to 6 participants so each individual can be supported to share their story and explore the suppressed emotions of their Cancer journey and develop resources to better cope with everyday life.

A Breast Cancer Survivor who has heard about the program shared:

“I've struggled to put my life, post chemo, double mastectomy & reconstruction complications, into words, in fact I think I have bottled up a lot of my emotions. Having the opportunity to express myself in a new way with others who “get it” would be incredible”
