Miami-Dade County has the highest percentage of people with serious mental illness of any metropolitan community in the United States.  Almost 10% of the population of Miami-Dade (210,000 people) have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness.  We’ve all witnessed the consequences of untreated mental illness in our communities (e.g., the young man who was shot and killed by police in Miami Gardens, the high school student who stabbed another student while in school, the pilot who crashed the plane killing 150 people, and the list goes on).

My name is Dr. Delvena Thomas, and I am a board-certified Psychiatrist practicing in North Miami, Florida.  I am also a Major in the U.S. Army reserves and a Veteran of Foreign Wars who has completed three tours of duty (Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait) who’s provided mental health care for soldiers needing help with stress reduction and therapy, family connectedness, and spiritual well-being.  In addition, I worked for seven years in federal law enforcement for the Bureau of Prisons.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. My private practice is hosting a free mental health awareness fair.  This is a formal invitation for you or your organization to consider a donation to help in promoting sound mental wellness.

When: Saturday, May 16, 2015, from 9:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Where: parking lot of 1125 NE 125th Street, the NOMI Building

It will begin with a special boot camp to promote physical health, which is vital to our total wellness.  The fair is free to the public, and my ultimate goal is to inform our community about the services available to prevent, manage, and treat mental illness.

In the United States alone, someone commits suicide every 40 seconds.  By the time you finish reading this page, someone will have killed themselves. In fact, over 800,000 people are dying every year from committing suicide.  Depression and anxiety are the most common medical problems worldwide, both illnesses affect people from all walks of life, and both could be treated and even prevented with an increase in awareness and advocacy. Studies have shown that people with mental illness die younger than those who do not have a mental health disorder, they go to prison more often, and have higher rates of drug use.

In my practice I encourage patients to strengthen and maintain all of the pieces of the puzzle: mental, physical, & spiritual.  I invited local practices and community health centers to participate by providing handouts to the community and answering questions about these areas in life.  We will provide free blood pressure screenings, blood sugar tests, and other services and information that can educate the community on preventative health care measures to live longer and be healthier.  My practice will provide the tables, food, refreshments, door prizes to the community and tents to ensure a comfortable experience for everyone!

Please consider donating to this much needed event.  Give this extra consideration so that we can all do our part in educating the community in the area of mental illness AND WELLNESS.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Sincerely,

Dr. Delvena R. Thomas

The mental health fair was a success. Your donations made it possible to create this outreach for the community and to offer them assistance. Here are some of the success stories from the fair:

An elderly gentleman came to the fair to get help for his 21 y/o son who likely has Schizophrenia and at times is terrorizing the home. He received information on placing him in an appropriate assisted living environment, along with other helpful information to continue him in treatment, including day programming.

A lady who has been living out of her car for two years was linked with a housing program. She should be in housing soon.

A lady received information on substance abuse treatment to access care for her twin teenage daughters. Some of the providers at the fair collaborated and created a program for them!

A gentleman with a long history of depression was scheduled to come in for a free initial assessment.

Thank you donors for making it possible!
