Brownsville to Barcelona
In July, we will embark on an eight-day tour of Spain, starting in Barcelona and ending in Madrid. You may know that I spent almost a year in that country after college, and in my career as a teacher, I’ve always wanted to give away a sense of what it is like being abroad in a more meaningful way than sharing my dusty old stories. Now is the time.
An international trip is of course very expensive. Each traveler is responsible for paying a portion of their trip cost—the goal is not to make the tour free—but with your help, this fundraiser reduces the amount each student must pay. Together, we will make it possible for those who normally could not afford this journey to have the same exposure as others from more fortunate families. And to be able to do this for students growing up in and around Brownsville, Brooklyn is even greater. I chose a career in the classroom for a chance to give young people access to opportunity, and this project is a great extension of that.
Your gift is providing FDA VII students with worldliness, cultural exchange, and lessons on history and geography that will be sealed in by the trip. They will have an unforgettable time, and I hope to inspire a lifetime of travel—at the very least, each participant will graduate with a passport and life stories attached to the stamps inside of it. This is the kind of contribution that makes a permanent difference.
We are traveling with Educational Tours, a leading international education company with a 50-year track record. They also have a price match guarantee for their tours. I wanted a company that could guarantee safety and minimal headaches, as this is about the experience our students will get above all else. The support, customization, and follow-up I’ve gotten from them have been fantastic and have built my trust in them quite a bit.
Coming soon, a promo video I shot with my students, and plenty of updates over the following weeks!
Thank you for your support.

To each and every one of our 1,020 donors, thank you! Without you, this would have just been a good idea or a wish. It is a reality -- somewhere there are mechanics checking a plane we will soon be on, hotel workers taking care of rooms we will pass through, a stamp in a drawer that will mark our passports in July, the whole nine. We are changing lives and minds.
Any additional funds we receive will be set aside for contingencies and expenses that will come up such as helping students in need to have a little spending money, and any remaining funds will be saved in a school bank account. Every dime of the funds you have contributed will be used in connection with trip expenses and nothing else. So to be clear, there IS a use for more donations.
I know from a meeting yesterday with my school's admin that the account for remaining funds is being set up -- there is a strong chance that international travel will continue into the future at FDA VII, so any remaining fruit will be used to plant seeds!
Good evening, everyone. Transparency is a beautiful thing. I had to adjust our campaign goal and want all of our supporters -- 870 people whom I can't thank enough -- where the adjustment comes from.
Our fundraiser was supposed to end by March 17th, but as you can see, we are still chugging along. I am not mad at ALL, because we have been on fire since April 5th, and EF Tours has been working with us. However, the delay means our booking costs increased. A second matter is that due to Department of Education policy, we have to have an extra chaperone, whose trip must be fully funded. I ain't mad about that, because the trip is even safer.
We will have many more updates in the coming days and weeks leading up to our July departure. A sneak peek: Spanish television station TVE sent reporter Almudena Ariza to interview us today about the trip. The only thing better than what we are experiencing will be stepping off that plane and onto the ground in Barcelona.
Saludos desde Brownsville,

My calculator is coming out to re-check all the numbers down to the cent as we near our goal. Any additional funds we receive beyond that will be transferred to a special school bank account I have discussed with my school's administration for trip contingencies and possible future travel.
Hope you reach your goal, I live in ENY and I worked at FDA8 a few years ago. I still live in ENY and I'm a teacher and I know how important it is to have kids in our community be able to travel and have positive experiences. I wasn't able to travel abroad until I was 19 years old and in college.
Very exciting! Traveling to Spain during college changed my life. I came back some years later and have been here for almost a decade! Excited for these students!
Keep it up ♥
to Bijoun Eric Jordan, please find yourself wellcome if coming to Madrid, I can Host up to 3 persons in the city center
I studied abroad in Spain in college. I hope your students are just as in awe of the country I was and truly appreciate and enjoy the experience. Have some paella for me!
This is such a great opportunity for these students. Thank you for giving the community this opportunity to help.
