Berlin-Peck Memorial Library Flood

Donation protected
Tuesday, 2/16/16, at 2am, a sprinkler pipe burst in the Children's Department of the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library. Although first responders arrived within minutes, it didn't take long for the water to do its damage. The resulting flooding covered the entire Children's Department and spread into the main lobby and circulation desk as well. Approximately 1,400non-fiction children's titles were lost, as well as many items in the play area, including puppets, toys and dress-up items. Many people are asking how they can best help. The non-fiction children's collection has been built up through special publishers that we order from regularly. Monetary donations are preferred, so we can replace the exact books that were damaged.

While insurance will pay for much of the damage, there will be extra ancillary costs. Our goal is to make the Children's Department as good as new, or even better!

On behalf of the Library staff, we appreciate your consideration.  To the children of Berlin, we're already working hard to get your Children's Department open for business again!

It is now March 28, and the Children's Department is just open for the first time in 6 weeks! We will start purchasing toys, and new copies of the damaged books, as well as new titles that we couldn't afford before, thanks to your generous donations.

As Director of the Berlin-Peck Library, I know I speak for the entire staff when I say how much we appreciate all your support. From your monetary donations to offers of replacing books on the shelves (which staff was able to accomplish), we were constantly humbled by seeing how much the library meant to you.

Come back, Berlin! We've missed you and are ready to see your smiling faces once again!
