Books for St. Lucia Library

$245 of $600 goal

Raised by 7 people in 34 months
The St. Lucia Public Library System has been an influential presence on the island since 1924. We have formed a partnership with the International Book Bank (IBB); a United States-based non-profit organization that provides books to libraries in need. IBB allows for libraries to select the books that will benefit their patrons and donates them free of charge; however, the receiving library must help pay for shipping and handling costs. We are hoping to  raise funds with this GoFundMe page to help cover charges for the books.

The St. Lucia Public Library System does not receive any budget for the improvement of the collection. Funds have not been allocated to the St. Lucia Public Library System to purchase books for over a decade. As a result, librarians and library staff work tirelessly to try and overcome this obstacle by fundraising and seeking out possible places for donations.

Many of the books throughout the library system are outdated, damaged, and irrelevant to the needs of library users. Through this partnership, the library system will be able to update our collection of resources and provide the general public, in communities throughout St. Lucia, with quality reading and research materials. St. Lucians of all ages and in all communities will benefit from this project, as the books will be distributed to branch libraries throughout the island. Ultimately, the St. Lucia Public Library system hopes to be a prime example that libraries have progressed and are now new learning sites, a space for personal skill development, and a place for citizens to exercise the basic human right of access to information and exchange of ideas.

Any donation amount would be greatly appreciated and will help us towards our goal!

More about me: I was a Peace Corps Response Volunteer working with the library system in St. Lucia. We created this page in the hopes to provide books to the library system, which serves a range of communities from rural villages to the capital city.

Happy Holidays! I've reduced the goal of this campaign because I have decided to donate some of my readjustment allowance to this cause. I could go on forever about how wonderful the staff across the St. Lucia Public Library System are but I would like to keep this short. Feel free to contact me directly if you would like to hear more about this project and we hope that you would contribute this holiday season to this wonderful cause. Please feel free to share with others.

These are some pictures of the summer programmes conducted by the St. Lucia Public Library System. During the summer months, when schools are closed, the 18 branches of the library system work to provide educational and fun programs for kids in communities throughout the island. This year children had the chance to learn about St. Lucia traditions & culture, home/fire safety, renewable energy sources, natural resources, and more.

Now that school is back in session, all the branches of the St. Lucia Public Library System continue to provide beneficial programs and services for their communities. From the restart of rural community outreach performed by the Book-mobile library, free lawyer consultation sessions, health fairs and breast cancer awareness events, fundraising for National Library Week, meetings of the Teen Advisory Group to improve teen programs, story-time hours, literacy programs, lectures, and more -- all in additional to serving as an open community space for people of all ages. The hard-working staff of St. Lucia Public Library System is dedicated to connecting with the public and promoting lifelong learning.

We strive to make our library system a well-rounded organization, providing for the needs of St. Lucians and visitors. However, the our influence is limited as we still lack funds to purchase educational resources for our patrons. Our partnership with the International Book Bank will supply each of the 18 branch libraries with select children's, young adult, and reference books to help develop our collections. We hope to raise funds by the end of the year which will bring an estimated 10,000 books to benefit our libraries!! Any donation towards this goal is greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate at this time, we would love for you to spread the word and share the hard work and spirit of library staff with the world.
