My students need help to afford the cost of taking part in a once in a lifetime trip to improve their French skills.

My Students

Despite facing turmoil in the last few years as the school transitioned from a public school to a public charter and was then placed on a state partnership to improve scores, my students show up to school every day ready to learn.

I teach at a Title I school in Muskegon, MI where almost 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch and who may not be able to afford opportunities other schools have.

French can be an intimidating subject for students to tackle, but my students have done it with enthusiasm. Every day they start class with a "bonjour!" and they exhibit immense amounts of curiosity about the world outside of the 4 square miles of their city.

My Project

Many of my students have never left the tri-city area around their school, and some have never left the four square miles that encompasses their small city. They are incredibly curious about French culture, and French Canadian culture. At the beginning of the year they asked for me to take them abroad so they could explore another culture. Traveling to Montreal and Quebec will give students a chance to experience other ways of living and to practice their burgeoning French skills.

Travel opens students' minds to other ways of living, improves their confidence and independence and this trip will provide an opportunity for growth and learning for these students.
With this opportunity, students can continue to build the sense of community they have developed in French class, increase their problem solving skills, and vastly improve their interpersonal skills.

Project Costs

The total cost for each student to go on this trip is $1,700 each. This will cover their airfare, meals, hotels, and all activities and educational activities that will be conducted in Montreal and Quebec as well as the costs of chaperones. We are also looking to help students with their cost of acquiring passports as well.  We are hoping to raise the money for a total of 40 students, which amounts to $68,000. Currently I am asking for $17,000 but the need is much greater.
