STEUN DE MOBIELE BIBLIOTHEEK ( DE BOEKENBUS ) IN GRIEKENLAND

We willen een mobiele bibliotheek inrichten voor de vluchtelingenkampen in Griekenland. Een ruimte om te leren en te ontdekken. En jij kan helpen.

 - WAT IS HET PROBLEEM?

We kunnen het ons amper voorstellen. Hals over kop te moeten vluchten voor oorlog, ellende en dagelijks terreur. Toch is het vandaag de realiteit voor miljoenen mensen. Bijna 60.000 van hen zijn momenteel gestrand in Griekenland. Ze leven in grote vluchtelingenkampen verspreid over heel Griekenland. En hun aantal stijgt. Dagelijks proberen honderden de gevaarlijke overtocht over zee te maken op zoek naar veiligheid en een leven dat niet geregeerd wordt door angst en risico's.

Door het sluiten van de grenzen in Griekenland, zijn ze momenteel verplicht te wachten. Uren, dagen en maanden wachten op mogelijk positief nieuws. Er wordt zelfs gesproken over jaren vooraleer alle aanvragen behandeld kunnen worden. Het leven in de vluchtelingenkampen wordt een leven in een vacuüm. Te lang geen mogelijkheid tot werk en onderwijs. Dit staat haaks op de ondernemingszin, de drang om iets te betekenen, de nieuwsgierigheid, de  creativiteit,… De vele jongvolwassenen in de kampen waren voorheen universiteits- en hogeschool studenten. Door de oorlog werd hun opleiding abrupt stopgezet. Dit zijn verloren jaren. Hun leven staat on hold.

 - HET PROJECT

Dé oplossing voor deze problematiek ligt bij onze beleidsmakers. De vluchtelingenproblematiek moet topprioriteit worden van Europa. De relocatie van vluchtelingen die momenteel vast zitten in kampen moet dringend gestart worden, veilige toegangswegen moeten gegarandeerd worden, mensenrechten moeten nagekomen worden, een integratiebeleid dringt zich op.

 Maar wat wil niet zeggen dat wij niets kunnen doen. Integendeel. Samen met velen wachtenden in Griekenland die we de laatste maanden leerden kennen (en hechte vrienden zijn geworden), kwamen we op het idee van een mobiele bibliotheek: een ruimte om te leren en te ontdekken. Onze mobiele bibliotheek, de ‘boekenbus’, moet het volgende voorzien :

-       Engelstalige en Arabische lees- en studieboeken.
-       Een studieruimte waar studenten toegang hebben tot online cursussen, artikels, documenten etc.
-       Toegang tot info over subsidiemogelijkheden en hulp bij aanvraagprocedures 
-       Toegang tot officiële taalcertificaties zoals TEFL en CELTA.
-       Individuele en gepersonaliseerde begeleiding en kleine groepslessen .
-       WiFi-verbinding. Internetverbinding is nog altijd zeer beperkt in de meeste kampen. De boekenbus zal ook fungeren als een internetstation.

 Hoewel in verschillende kampen reeds taallessen worden georganiseerd,  zal de  ‘boekenbus’, ons de mogelijkheid geven om een veel grotere impact te hebben en  meer jongvolwassenen te bereiken in de verschillende kampen in Noord-Griekenland.

 - WAT KAN JIJ DOEN?

Vind je dit project zinvol? Je wil bijdragen? Graag! Er bestaan verschillende mogelijkheden.

1.    Je hebt 1 minuut tijd? Deel dit bericht op facebook. Hoe meer mensen weten over de mobiele bibliotheek, hoe beter. Overtuig mensen in je omgeving. Vertel hen van ons project.

2.    Je hebt boeken? Een boekenbus is niets zonder boeken. Heb je Engelstalige of Arabische lees- en studieboeken die je graag aan dit project wilt schenken? Je kan de bibliotheek in je buurt overtuigen om enkele boeken weg te schenken? Contacteer [email redacted] 


3.    Je hebt ander interessant materiaal? We hebben nood aan (oude) laptops, smartphones, Kindles, Ipads etc.  We hebben nood aan pampers.

4.     Je wil financieel bijdragen? Om de mobiele bibliotheek ook in het echt waar te maken, hebben we financiering nodig. We moeten een bus aankopen, de bus inrichten en het project draaiende houden. 1 of 100 euro, alle beetjes helpen. Heeft u geen VISA of Mastercard, dan kan er altijd een bijdrage gestort worden. ENGLISH VERSION :

For young asylum seekers in Greece waiting for their claims to be heard, life is on hold. Students and professionals who fled to safety now lie in wait, with little to do. We intend to change that.

The Situation

There are nearly 60,000 asylum seekers stranded in Greece.

This number rises every day, as people continue to make the boat crossing to land on Mediterranean shores in the hopes of making it on into Europe. They have made this journey in search for safety, and the opportunity to live a life not governed by risk and by fear.

With the closure of the borders, those in Greece are now forced to wait for months - even over a year - for their claims to be heard and processed.

The wait is long, anxious and uncertain. For individuals who are hungry for action and the chance to put their knowledge and skills to use, it is all the more frustrating to see this time go to waste.

Who we are

ECHO was begun by four individuals who spent time volunteering in EKO, an informal refugee camp built upon a petrol station 20 kms south of the Greece-FYROM border, in the spring of 2016. We are from a variety of different backgrounds but we have one common goal: to go where we must, and do what we can, to create spaces for learning and community within refugee camps. Our name, as well as alluding to the place where it all began - EKO camp - speaks to those things we are determined to nurture: Education, Community, Hope, Opportunity.

The Project

In the face of these circumstances, having created close connections with many of the individuals waiting in Greece, we feel that there is real need to shift from the task of 'filling time' to that of 'using time'.

One of the best ways to accomplish this is to make educational resources readily available, and ensure access to both physical and digital learning tools and opportunities.

We want to build a mobile library - a space of learning where just such resources are available. Within this library we hope to provide the following:

A quiet reading space
Access to online university courses and eLearning tools
Support in researching and applying to scholarship opportunities
English language learning, training individuals towards official certification such as the IELTS
One-on-one and small group tutoring sessions
This project was begun with young adults - former university and high school students who had their educations violently interrupted - in mind. These are key years that will shape their future lives and careers; many years have been lost already, but the trend need not continue.

The Vision

While we have established a library space in Vasilika camp alongside English language classes for adults and teenagers (4 classes per day- beginners, intermediate, advanced, basic literacy), we feel that our reach is still limited relative to the huge need in the region.

Going mobile will allow us to make a much greater impact and reach more young adults around Greece. The mobility of the project is key, because it ensures that we are able to adapt and respond accordingly in this chaotic context. It also ensures the longevity of the project, by enabling us to move the education centre to wherever it may be needed most.


We hope to transform the refugee camps in which we work from places of stagnancy and waiting, to places where dreams and drive remain alive. Much like the way an echo carries, the voices of those on the journey to safety can and must be heard miles from where they began, and further still.
