The Blue Tarp School Fund
Tax deductible
Dear friends and families,
As part of our kindergarten social justice project this year, we read the book Armando and the Blue Tarp School which is based on a true story about children that work alongside their families to make a living. The book tells the story of a child who works with his father as pepenadores (trash pickers) to help support his family in the Tijuana dump in Mexico. We learned that not all children have the opportunity to go to school. This was of great concern to our students.
When a visiting teacher, by the name of David Lynch, arrives in the colonia, he sets up a school on a blue tarp. For the children living in the colonia, this was their first opportunity to experience school. From its humble beginnings as a school set up on a blue tarp, it has grown today through generous donations to become an actual school building called Escuela David Lynch located near the colonia in Tijuana, Mexico.
Our students decided that they wanted to help kids like Armando be able to go to school. They came up with the idea that if we each gave a little we could make a big difference. Our goal is to have our students see themselves as part of a global community that can have a positive impact on children around the world. Thank you for supporting this project. Any size donation is welcome.
Sincerely,
Shorewood Hills Kindergarten
