****IMPORTANT UPDATE****

Donations are still open but unfortunately have not yet reached our goal target. Please share to your networks far and wide!

The funds we have gathered so far are in a secure account and we want to either keep the secured funds for the next Black Panther film or to host another screening towards the end of the year. I am wanting the latter.

I currently have only myself and one other working on the administration with various groups and networks in Melbourne. To co-ordinate the first screening was a massive undertaking. At this point in time, due to my current studies and research schedule,  I neither have the time or resources to commit to arranging another screening until the month of December. I will at least have much more time available and can commit the the necessary arrangements. (Facilitating 500+ youth from across Melbourne is intense but well worth the hard work). I want you to know that I intend keep our commitment to the African and Indigenous youth of Melbourne to gain access to see this film. We WILL host another screening  and I hope we can eventually reach our end goal before December.

Looking forward to sharing the next chapter of the journey with you all and thank you so much for your donations and support. I will keep sharing this page and won’t stop until we reach our end goal.

Warm regards,
Shareena Clanton

••••Original Post••••
My name is Shareena Clanton and I am an actress from the Foxtel/Netlflix series "Wentworth".

I am a proud Wongatha/Yamatji and Noongar/Gitja woman from Perth, WA and I currently live in Melbourne.

On the 15th of February "Black Panther" will be released nationwide in Australian cinemas.

This is a highly anticipated film and I am wanting to  secure a 488 seat cinema at Hoyts in Melbourne Central so that we can send our Indigenous and African youth, within our local Melbourne community, to the cinema. This is about creating an opportunity for disadvantaged youth to see "Black Panther" if they cannot afford to.

HELP US PACK OUT THE CINEMA!

It's important for our youth to see this film because representation matters and Black superheroes are an inspiration for our children.

The price per seat is $12.

$12 + $12  combo (a small popcorn, a 600ml drink and a choc top included) = $24 per person.

$24 x 488 seats, comes to a total of $11,712

Would you be able to assist me in any way?

Please pass onto your networks, share and support in any way you can.

As artists, we ourselves have limited means to make this happen and I am requiring a collective effort and support to help make this into a reality.

This is a film directed by Ryan Coogler; who is a black director, directing a predominately black cast in a story that puts a black superhero from an African-inspired nation front and centre of a true blockbuster release from a major studio.

This film matters.

Jen Yamato (Los Angeles Times) calls it “incredible, kinetic, purposeful. A superhero movie about why representation and identity matters, and how tragic it is when those things are denied to people. The [first] MCU movie about something real."

Update:
PHENOMENAL NEWS re: Black Panther Screening.

Marvel are helping me facilitate a screening to engage disadvantaged Indigenous and African youth in Melbourne so that there will be no costs involved for this event.

I will continue to keep this GoFundMe open to contributions and please donate if you can so that all funds are directed towards engaging more youth groups and members of the community in order for us to host another screening and so they can have the chance to see this film beyond the 24th of February. The more opportunities for our black youth to access a screening to this film, the better.

This screening I want to hold is an opportunity to help dismantle negative stereotypes by engaging with various groups and organisations that are already doing phenomenal work within our black communities across Melbourne.

This is about standing in solidarity with our fellow Indigenous and African community members whilst cultivating an environment of leadership and inspiration so that we can all take pride in "Black Panther".

Above all, this superhero film uplifts the black roots of ancient royalty and represents Wakanda as the most technologically advanced nation in the world. This film, culminated with the celebration of our beautiful strength and black beauty, is everything it should be and more.

Everything we do is about building and maintaining legacy and opening up the platforms of inclusion. I hope this film both encourages and inspires the next leaders in this world to platform a level of intellectual potency and activate change within our society.

This film is important and allowing children access to see this film is important.

I have been given absolute authority to head this event and I want to provide as many of our economically struggling youth the opportunity to see this historic film.

I am needing to speak with various Indigenous and African focused youth groups and organisations to help me fill this 488-seat theatre on Saturday the 24th of February. (There was an option to move this screening to next weekend but we need more time to gather the youth and secure the numbers).

Spread the word as much as possible.

Thank you in advance and I look forward to sharing this journey with you.

X
