CRITICAL UPDATES as of Feb 15:
Many hands make light work. ~ Haya (Tanzania) Proverb

#1 - SUPER THANK YOU to the 162 individuals who have contributed to this campaign over the past 14 days...
#2 - In the spirit of having accountability throughout this effort - BGCN Leadership and I have decided to reduce the goal amount to $10,000.  Counts of participating children has been reduced to 600 and through great efforts from the BGCN team, CityPlex will now charge $15 per child for the movie, popcorn and drink.  And, BGCN will be asking parents to contribute $5 per child to contribute to the bus transportation cost which is expected to run approx. $3,000.

So here are the adjusted figures:
Movie & refreshments for 600 children @ $15 = $9,000
Movie & refreshments for 30 Chapperones @ 15 = $450

$5 per child for bus transportation (to be requested from parent) = $3,000

Answering the #BlackPantherChallenge, this campaign seeks to raise $14,000 to take 650 children from the Boys and Girls Club of Newark to see the highly anticipated release of the Black Panther movie.  It’s simple – mockery is flattery so SUPER CONGRATULATIONS to Fredrick Joseph for his success in raising 4x his goal for the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem.  It’s Newark’s time now… #BlackPantherChallenge #BGCN #BlackPantherChallengeNewark

About The Boys & Girls Club of Newark

BGCN's programs take into consideration the context in which their kids live and grow every day. While the city of Newark has made exponential progress in the areas of preschool enrollments, high school graduation rates, and juvenile arrests, there is still work to be done. Pervasive poverty still persists, with nearly three quarters of Newark’s children living in families who earn too little to pay the rent, buy food, and afford quality childcare. BGCN provides a safe haven where children and their families get the extra support they need in the face of uncertainty to thrive.

Why is it so important for them to see the Black Panther movie?  Many, many reasons but here are just a few...

1.   He’s a superhero! Any African American child will be thrilled to see this movie on the big screen.

2.   As King of Wakanda, Black Panther represents symbolisms of justice, pride, strength, hope and more... all great examples for these children.

3.   The beautiful imagery of Motherland Africa is reflected throughout the movie.

4.   The actors/actresses show real examples of what hard work can do. Inspiration can come from all sources.

So that’s why this campaign exists.  Let’s allow these children the opportunity to see positive images of characters who look like them on the big screen - superheroes, royalty, beauty and grace.

The campaign details ... ALL PROCEEDS of this campaign will go toward tickets and snacks for 650 children and 25 chaperones.  The screenings will occur shortly after the release of the film (February 16th, 2018)  once private screenings can be scheduled with the City Plex 12 theater in Newark.  These screenings will likely take place between February 25th and 29th.

Cost estimates:
-$20.00 per child ticket and refreshments
-$20.00 per chaperone ticket with refreshments

Campaign goal includes cost of approximately 3% fees (2.9% + $0.30 per donation).

*ANY remaining balance of donations after the movie experience is paid for will go to the organization*

*Movie/refreshment purchase receipts will be posted on this page after the campaign and movie event is complete.*

Enormous THANK YOU for your support!!
