Black Conference National Tour

Tax deductible
The Black Conference Touring Company  is a cooperative of performing artists engaging audiences through interactive performances designed to empower communities to take collective action.

Black Conference is a 360◦ theater experience set in 1939, during the opening ceremonies of a civil rights conference. Packed with drama and political intrigue, Black Conference brings guests face to face with civil rights greats Ella Baker, W.E.B. Du Bois, Zora Neale Hurston, Thurgood Marshall, Bayard Rustin and many more as they risk everything to build power and secure place for Negroes in America. The play takes reliable strategies that won civil rights legislation, fair labor contracts, and so forth, and breaks them down so everyday individuals can use them to address their own economic challenges.

Lifting People out of Poverty
We're raising money to take this play...it's more than a play really...but we're taking it to low-income communities across the country to share a message about the power of collective community action to lift people out of poverty. We're raising enough to travel to five locations, Detroit is at the top of the list. In each case funds from the campaign will pay half the cost and the community we visit will be responsible for raising the other half, requiring commitment from that community, and some of the grassroots effort required for these strategies to work.

Launching the Tour at the 2018 Worker Cooperative National Conference
From September 14 – 16, 2018 the 20-member company of Black Conference will be in Los Angeles presenting at the 2018 Worker Cooperative National Conference that will be held at Los Angeles Trade Tech College, 400 West Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90015. The company is looking for an opportunity to present the play in its entirety while in Los Angeles to share the message of the power of collective action to lift people out of poverty with diverse communities on a pay-what-you-can basis, while receiving enough in donations to be able to carry the play to its next stop on a national tour.

Help us Raise Half by July 1 (and the Rest by Fall 2018!)
In order to achieve that goal the company is seeking to raise half of the $25,000 goal by July 1, 2018 and the full $25,000 by the time the group arrives in Los Angeles.
