Caring for Carson

Donation protected
On Nov. 30, 2015 Carson James Ludka was born 10 weeks prematurely. Previous to his birth, his mom, Tracy, was admitted to the hospital at 27 weeks due to complications with the placenta not working properly and not giving Carson the nutrients he needed. Carson was born by emergency Caesarian due to his heart rate declining down to 80 for 3 minutes at a time while being monitored in the womb. He was only 1 lb 14 ounces, and 14.25 inches long. Due to his small size he was considered intra uterine growth restriction (IUGR). He stayed at Neenah Children's Hospital in the NICU. Despite all the odds Carson showed us how much of a fighter he is and grew to be a little over 3 lbs and grew an additional inch!!! Before Carson became sick his favorite things were his mom and dad's touch, being bathed by daddy, and his mommy singing to him. On Tuesday Dec. 29, 2015 Carson became very ill and was diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a medical condition primarily seen in premature babies causing inflammation and infection of the bowel. After much discussion between multiple doctors a decision was made that Carson should be cared for at the Milwaukee Children's Hospital due to surgeons they have available. Carson was airlifted through flight for life to Milwaukee hospital on New Year's Eve. The flight was a risky trip but the doctors felt that this was his only hope. He suffered several small and one large seizure right before he was to be transported by helicopter.  Carson made the trip to Milwaukee NICU but is in critical condition. After examination the doctors determined not to do surgery due to his vulnerable state leaving the family to pray that Carson would pull through.  Four days after his arrival in Milwaukee, Carson opened his eyes showing us once again the power of prayer and what a fighter Carson is. The doctors have warned the family to take one day at a time considering Carson is still in a critical state. However, this has provided new found hope for the family. As Carson is fighting this illness, unfortunately this is not the only obstacle he will be facing. An ultrasound has shown that Carson has 3 holes in his heart and may need surgery on his liver and kidneys due to the trauma they have endured trying to fight off this sickness. Tracy and Brian are remaining strong for Carson and showing unconditional love. Tracy is staying in Milwaukee until she and Brian can bring home Carson, which will not be for several months. Brian is making trips from Neenah to Milwaukee multiple times a week trying to juggle work and be there for his family. The amount of care that Carson needs and will need is becoming more clear as we see him fight. We want to give him the best care we possibly can. We appreciate any donation you and your family can provide. Keep the prayers coming!!!!
