Milan's Fundraiser 2016
This is Milan's story:
"In December of 2014, after experiencing symptoms, I made a visit to the emergency room and requested an ultrasound of my abdomen. The ultrasound was performed on December 13 and revealed a large 8.2cm mass within my right kidney, and an enlargement of several lymph nodes in the area. I was scheduled for a CT scan on December 15 which revealed that the mass was most likely cancerous and that it had spread to the regional lymph nodes within the abdomen; distant lymph nodes; all three lobes on both lungs and the liver.
I was scheduled for a biopsy on December 22, and by January 13, 2015, the cancer was revealed to be a Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the right kidney. This is a diagnosis that has been made under 50 times in history.
I underwent 6 rounds of chemotherapy between February and July of 2015, followed by surgery to remove my kidney and abdominal lymph nodes on August 10, 2015. The surgery was successful but still left residual disease in the liver, lungs and distant lymph nodes which continued to grow. I underwent three more rounds of chemotherapy, which proved to be unsuccessful, from December of 2015 to March of 2016.
Due to the rarity of the cancer, no real approved treatment exists apart from the standard chemotherapy which I did in early to mid 2015. Because no standard treatments exist, all costs generally have to be paid out of pocket and experimental treatments have to be sought out."
Since Milan's diagnosis, he has and continues to spend countless hours researching the literature for evidence-based treatment options. Milan has been in contact with a doctor in Germany and hopes to attempt a therapy with great potential. Unfortunately, it comes with a great cost of approximately $4000/treatment for multiple treatments.
Any contribution is greatly appreciated and will count towards helping Milan along his journey.
Thank you for supporting the fight against cancer!
However, the last round of scans showed tumours growing at a very fast rate - with six large tumours in the liver, along with many abdominal and lung tumours as well a bone tumour presenting as a fracture in my pelvis.
I have decided to undergo treatment with an American interventional radiologist. This treatment involves locally cooling down single tumours (cryoablation) and injecting them with a new class of immunotherapy drugs, with the hope being that the tumour destruction created by the cryoablation leads to the immune system recognizing and destroying all tumours in my body, when stimulated by the proceeding immunotherapy injections.
This treatment will be done with curative intent (ie. we will be trying to achieve a cure with this treatment), and has shown promising results. However, the immunotherapy drugs are extremely expensive, and this treatment will cost around $60,000USD in total (therapy, hospitalization, travel, accommodations). I have a good chunk of this covered from your generous earlier donations (about 1/3 of it) but am still quite short and would be extremely appreciative of any further donations.
The treatments would not have been possible without the generous donations from everybody and I am extremely appreciative of all of the money raised as it has really made a difference.
However, at a cost of €3900 (~$5600CAD) per treatment, and six treatments in the books, I have quickly exhausted all of the funds apart from a small amount of savings previously held. As such, I have decided to raise my goal a little bit more in an effort to fund the final few therapies in Germany and to explore a more systemic option within the United States after the German treatments have concluded. Any help in doing this is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
