Donation protected
In memory of Betty Hatchell White, a beloved music teacher in the South Metro Atlanta area, The Betty Hatchell White Music Scholarship has been initiated by her family to assist a variety of music organizations that she was honored to serve throughout her life. The funds will be collected by her family and distributed to the organizations on a yearly basis.
In support of South Metro Atlanta Music Teachers Association (SMAMTA), the Georgia Music Teachers Association (GMTA) and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) the objective of this fund will be to assist and promote the professional fraternity among music teachers: to stimulate professional growth among music teachers and to encourage and give broader opportunities to music students, particularly those exceptional students in need of financial assistance to pursue their musical development and passions.
Betty was a former elementary music teacher in the Clayton County School System, operated a private piano studio for over 40 years, adjudicated frequently and served as a church pianist.
Betty attended LaGrange College on scholarship, where she studied with Walter Westafer. She received a Bachelor of Music Education degree with emphasis in piano from the University of Georgia, where she was a student of Despy Karlas. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity and served as State Piano Chair of GMEA.
In addition to these honors Betty Hatchell White served as President of South Metro Atlanta Music Teachers Association (SMAMTA) from 1976-1978 and again from 2006-2008. She was President of the Georgia Music Teachers Association (GMTA) from 1996-1998. Betty was honored to receive Music Teachers National Association Foundation Fellow (MTNA) in 2013.
