Betsy Hasselquist, my sister, lost her home this week to a flood.  She lives in the country just outside Paola, KS on Wea Creek, normally a quiet meandering creek.  Tuesday morning, August 22, that changed.  Twelve (12) inches of rain poured down in a very short period of time.
Betsy woke early that morning to find that her yard had flooded and it soon entered her home.  Very quickly it reached hip deep in her home.  She called 911 and the response team dispatched help.  She climbed out her upstairs window (dog in tow) to the roof where they were able to hand her down into the waiting boat.  (Thank you to those who rescued her).

The devastation was immense.  Betsy’s home will have to be completely rebuilt if she can even stay on the property.   All her furnishings and appliances were ravaged. Her outbuildings and all that was in them were also flooded.  Her car was flooded.

Betsy had no flood insurance for her home and outbuildings.

Her home is where her heart and her history is.  She has lived there for 38 years.  Betsy gave birth to her two sons in that home and raised them to be outstanding men.

Betsy loves living in the country and is a master gardener.  Her garden was also lost.

The outpouring of support has been heartwarming.  Friends and neighbors showed up with equipment, muscle and food to help as we salvaged what was possible, trashed what was destroyed and began to dismantle the walls and flooring to see if there was any hope of saving the house.  It is mindblowing how fast mold sets in and what has to be done in the clean up process.

Many people have asked how they could help.  And, so, this is a way that people who want to help can do so.  Any money raised will go directly into building and furnishing Betsy’s home.

If anyone has any questions, I am happy to answer them.

Happy New Year. We wanted to once again thank all the people who contributed to Betsy's house fund and all the contributions of labor and kindness. Thanks to everyone's help, Betsy has purchased a small ranch home in Paola. She is moving in this weekend. Betsy has mixed feelings as you can imagine and is still exploring what can be done with her property but for now she will have a place she can call home again.

In honor of Giving Tuesday, I wanted to thank each of you again for contributing to Betsy's house fund.

I also wanted to let you know Betsy found a country home for her dog, Digger, through her Master Gardener network. We hope he will be happy with his new playmates.

If you know of anyone who is wondering where to contribute that will make a significant difference on Giving Tuesday, please share this link.

Thank you again.

Here is a note from Betsy --
Sadly, since my house flooded and I do not yet have a permanent home yet, I’m needing to find a good home for my dog Digger.

He is a handsome guy. He’s great with people, kids and other dogs. He’s smart, lovable, house broken and good on a leash.

He is used to running free in the country and is a great indoor companion and would love walks.

He’s 6 years old, a blue healer mix.

Please feel free to share this notice and if you or someone you know has an interest you can respond to this notice and we will get in touch.

I wanted to update you on Betsy’s progress. She is investigating all her options in terms of rebuilding which would require raising the house and all utilities. Friends have been helping research the options such as pedestal houses. However, it is looking more and more like the most cost-effective route will be to move. Betsy has talked with a realtor who now is watching the market for a house in Paola or preferably a small place in the country. She has started the process for mortgage loan pre-approval – property in the area sells fast so she has to be ready if something comes up that fits her criteria. FEMA, unfortunately has not approved the area as a disaster and we are not hopeful in light of the many disasters that have occurred around the county.

In the meantime, Betsy is living with Max and Hannah.

Please feel free to share this update with the family, friends and neighbors who have been so helpful to Betsy.
