Imagine your loved one complaining of a headache and then collapsing on the floor ...and has stopped breathing. On the afternoon of SUNDAY, JULY 17, 2016, my sister Beth, and her husband John, experienced this horrific situation. Beth was the one on the floor ...John immediately started CPR while calling 911, which was the only thing that kept her alive. She was taken to the local hospital in their hometown of Bridgeport, CT, where the specialized medical care she needed wasn't available.
With on-going efforts to stabilize her, she was medevacked to Yale University Medical Center in New Haven, CT. Beth "coded" twice more in the Emergency Room before she was finally stabilized and moved upstairs to the Neuroscience ICU. We learned she had a massive stroke (a subarachnoid hemorrhage) due to an aneurysm right in the middle of her brain.
Those first two weeks were frightening ...not knowing if she would even survive, much less return to her old self. She was in a coma, on a ventilator, on dozens of different medications, and endured two critical surgerys (as well as numerous procedures), just to keep her alive.
Over these past few weeks, we've watched her progress improve at an amazing pace. First in the ICU at Yale, and now at an Acute Stroke Rehab Center ...but she still has quite a ways to go. We have repeatedly been told this will be a marathon, measured in months, not in days or weeks, and we should pace ourselves accordingly.
Unfortuately, her bills are starting to pile up. Even though she is medically insured, it's far from 100%, and we've heard that the total cost associated with these types of strokes, and their recovery, could be well into the millions. With her total out-of-pocket expenses remaining unknown to us at this time, we are asking for your support in her continued recovery.
Any help you could provide towards Beth's surgery and rehabilitation expenses would be very appreciated. Some will donate less, some will donate more, but every single dollar counts and will make all the difference towards her recovery—both physically and financially.
