This win qualifies them to compete in the Vex IQ World Championship tournament in Louisville Kentucky at the end of April 2018!!
2017-2018 is the first season that these boys have been part of Berthoud Robotics and the first year they have ever built a robot to compete in any competitions. A first year team making it to the world competition is a very big accomplishment!
When they were signed up for their first tournament they were struggling to get a fairly complex machine to function properly. It was only two weeks before the first tournament and they decided to reevaluate some of the complex mechanisms they were trying to design. The decision to step back and take a look at what worked well and what didn't work reliably paid off for them. They decided that doing the tasks simply and reliably was the way to go even if it wasn't the fastest or "coolest" idea they'd had.
All of them worked, and are still working, very hard! Meeting in the evening two or three times a week to complete building, programming, and testing. After each tournament they'd write down what worked well and what needed improvement. They came up with new ideas to solve the issues and build from their strengths while budgeting their time to be sure they could complete the changes in time for the next tournament.
In the end all the hard work is paying off. On to worlds!
This year Berthoud Robotics has FOUR teams going to the Vex World Championships. Unfortunately the entry fee (~$900 per team) has cleaned out the club's bank account. This leaves the families to try and find the money for each kid's travel, hotel, transportation, and food.
So.. We are asking for anything you feel comfortable giving to help us get these guys to Kentucky.
