On Jan 31st, 2018, Bernie Anderson (Noba’s Dad) lost his cabin home to a fire.  Noba and Pete arrived home to find the cabin on fire, the roof already engulfed in flames. Bernie was safe, but his home and possessions were gone in a few hours.

The cabin was finally completed in the late fall with finishing details including window trim, covered porch and ramp, lovely deck and new wood stove.  As you can imagine, with no insurance, the fire was a huge loss for Bernie, Noba and Pete. Bernie also lost his hand crafted sailboat and all of his photos, journals and personal treasures.

Bernie moved into 1 year old Zyla’s bedroom, in Noba and Pete’s home, the day of the fire and they shuffled things to accommodate him. Now a month later, they are beginning to talk about the best way to move forward. Wanting to keep him on their land and on Cortes island in his senior years, they are figuring out what to build for him and how to manifest it.

The funds we are trying to raise is a 'bare bones' amount, enough to support them in getting materials and some labour to frame and insulate a structure that will accommodate Bernie. They are also accepting donations of labour and materials for the building process.

This awesome island family needs our support in recovering from this financial loss. This long-standing island tradition of helping those who’ve experienced a loss is one of the many things that makes Cortes Island so special.

Please email me if you are interested in donating labour or materials and I will be in touch when the building commences.

With warm thanks,
The Harvey Family
(neighbours and friends of the Andersons)

Thank you to each one of you who donated to Bernie's Cabin Fire Rebuild campaign. I wanted to express my sincere apologies about the legal action towards Noba that has come from the campaign. I know it has impacted those of us who live on Cortes in a shocking and sad way and some of us have been named in the legal action paperwork. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or discussion (0323). I am now taking the Go Fund Me page down, so this is a final message to once again say Thank you! The safety net and love you showed Bernie and his family through your donations is what makes our island home special. Bernie is now living in his new room! I saw him on Saturday and while I had to remind him of who I was and where I lived, he was happy, playing with Zyla and full of beans, as usual! Love and gratitude, Lovena

Hello Friends,
Bouquets of roses to everyone who donated to Bernie's Cabin Fire Rebuild fund! The rebuilding project of a room for Bernie, onto Noba and Pete's home, is well underway. With cash donations we exceeded our fundraising goal and hope that this will be enough to get the space to 'lock up'. We have also had three successful work bees, with motivated inspiring local folks! What a huge success and tribute to our amazing Cortes community. We are so grateful for all the support - thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thank you again wonderful people connected to Cortes Island. With cash donations that have been given to Noba and Bernie, we have well exceeded our $3000 goal! Also, we have so many offers of labour help when the building begins. Noba, Pete and Bernie are so very touched by your kindness. Stay tuned on Tideline for news of workbee building days. Like barn raisings of days gone by, it will be both fun and inspiring! With many thanks, Lovena

Thank you so much for supporting Bernie, Noba, Pete and Zyla with your generous contributions. I have been truly touched reading the names of the kind people who have donated, especially knowing our limited incomes on Cortes.
Noba and Pete have begun planning the bedroom they will add to their home for Bernie. In this way he can be under their roof, playing with Zyla and surrounded by the vivacious energy of the household.
Thank you for your generosity and kindness!
