Please help me raise much needed funds for children in Nepal. Only 7 weeks until we head to Nepal and Everest Base Camp!!
As you probably already know I have been dreaming of going to Nepal and trekking to Everest Base Camp for a very long time. Well that dream is becoming a reality as I am heading over there in October this year and aiming to make it to Base Camp (and return!). I expect it will be quite a challenging trip in many ways – starting with the hair raising flight into Lukla, adjusting to the high altitude, no real shower for 14 days, temps likely to be -10 at night, and not to mention having to overcome one of my worst fears - swing bridges - and there are stacks of them!
Raising Awareness
But more importantly I want to raise awareness and much needed funds for a specific Australian charity that achieves some amazing work in Nepal.
Some background - Nepal is considered to be the poorest country in South Asia, with between 30 to 40% of Nepalese living below the poverty line.
And compounding this situation is the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that hit Nepal in April 2015 - the worst to hit the Himalayan nation in 80 years. The magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck approx 80km northwest of the capital Kathmandu and has affected eight million people, just under one-third of the population, with upwards of 5,000 people killed.
Many people have been left homeless and water sources depleted.
“Reach Out Nepal” is an Australian based organisation that supports Nepal in a number of ways:
* To maintain a residence from which orphaned and abandoned children in Nepal are provided with shelter, food, clothing and education
* Directly helps relieve poverty & distress of children in Nepal
Current projects underway are:
School Education Sponsorship program
Helps the most marginalized children go to school, by paying for the basics of school fees, uniforms and books.
“Give a gift that grows” – Pig & Goat donation program
Donate goats or pigs to selected poor families so they can earn an income by raising, breeding, and selling the animals. Upon receiving gifted pigs or goats, these families MUST send their children to school and eventually donate animals back to the program to assist further families in need.
School & Hospital projects
Re-building of 2 schools after the earthquakes and building a new boarding school. Providing necessary equipment and furnishings to Jibajibe hospital.
