Saying Thank You-For 26.2 Miles!

No one is ever ready. No one is ever ready for illness themselves or to hear that their child has a life-threatening illness.

How do you go to work? How do you function? One minute you were living your best life and the next, everything has changed and morphed into a painful nightmare.

It was out of these moments of
despair and heartache that Tomorrows Children's Fund was born. It was out of the painful reality of parents having to hear that their child has cancer. To learn that their child has sickle cell anemia and will not grow up as  "normal" children do.

Tomorrows Children's Fund was organized by parents of those being treated for cancer and sickle cell anemia to help create hope and support for both patients and their families.

Who has the time or energy to cook dinner when your 3 year old is undergoing chemotherapy treatment?

How do you make sure that a birthday spent in the hospital still brings a smile to a child's face?

What happens to your mortgage when you leave your job to sit in the hospital with your child?

From toys and games, to paying bills, and even making sure that the siblings of patients are taken care of Tomorrows Children's Fund has made it its mission to be there for patients in every way possible. It is often the smallest acts that can bring so much joy and hope to a child who is ill and therefore TCF goes above and beyond to assist in both large and small ways!

Children need their parents and families support but who is supporting them? TCF ensures that everyone is taken care so that ultimately, the child battling cancer or sickle cell anemia can focus all of their hope and strength to beating the disease.

It is because of this that I attempt to give a LONG overdue thank you to TCF for all they have done for me and my family.

Here is a Bit About My Story:

In 1990 I was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 4 and TCF was there for my family and I from almost the very moment our lives all changed.

I remember very very little from this time but I always say that I attribute the fact that I only remember positive things about my treatment because of the wonderful medical team and Hackensack University Medical Center and the incredible staff at Tomorrows Children's Fund.

TCF remained my close family until I entered remission. Several years later, in 1998, I was diagnosed with a squamous cell carcinoma tumor on my tongue. BAM- now at age 12- my life- no, OUR lives- changed all over again. Once again the first people we saw after my doctor was our family at Tomorrows Children's Fund.

I have since gone on to have a wonderful and "normal" life. I am now a High School Social Studies teacher at Wood-Ridge High School in NJ where I also coach track. Having found a love for running, and coaching track at Wood-Ridge High School, I have completed 52 half marathons and the 2018 NYC Marathon on November 4th will be my 8th full marathon!

My Mission:

There is not a day that goes by when I am running that I am not forever grateful to my family, friends, and family at TCF for being able to wake up, lace up my sneakers, and hit the road. With every mile, I am reminded of how this story could have went differently. We all have a finite amount of time on this planet however some are shorter than others. I am beyond blessed to be taking to the streets of NYC once again and to express my gratitude, I would love to give back to Tomorrows Children's Fund in the process.

Please consider donating to this wonderful cause! I can tell you- I would not be who I am, I certainly might not be running another marathon- I might not even be here- if not for my incredible family at Tomorrows Children's Fund!

I am one story, but there are many in the same situation I was in right now at Hackensack University Medical Center and TCF is working for them at every moment.

Just think how far $2.62 could go?

Maybe $10?

What about $26.20?
