Beat The Breakdown Walk

"If at first, the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it." - Albert Einstein

This quote seems to suit us perfectly… a group of girls (and one guy!) who always have wild ideas, often born after a drink (or two). The difference this time? This idea, absurd to us at first, is coming to fruition. In July, we will endeavour on a near 100km walk from Warren to Narromine, in an effort to raise awareness and funds for mental health and the non-profit organisation “Beat the Breakdown”. Beat the Breakdown, which is being spearheaded here in the shire by local man Billy Browning, organises a variety of workshops that focus on mental health and wellbeing, the brilliant “Man Up” series at local schools being the most recent. (Check out the link to see how great this program is: http://iview.abc.net.au/programs/man-up/DO1504H002S00#playing )

When looking at the statistics, mental health issues present a harsh reality for many, hence the reason we want to raise funds for such an important cause.

Did you know that every day, more than eight Australians take their life? If you do the maths, this figure amounts to more than 3,000 suicides every year.

For every death by suicide, it is estimated that as many as 30 people attempt to end their lives. That means approximately 65,300 Aussies attempt to take their life each year. To put that in perspective, that is more than the population of Warren, Trangie, Narromine and Dubbo put together- a scary thought.

All money raised on this walk will stay here in the shire, and go towards further workshops and programs that support mental health and wellbeing. We have been incredibly lucky to have individual sponsors on this walk, who have rallied behind us and this cause! A huge shout out to AUSCOTT, Delta Ag Trangie, Michell Machinery and WESTPAC.

For those of you who know us, you will realise this walk will be no mean feat!

Setting off on July 6 from Warren, we will (we hope to) arrive in Narromine on July 7 at Cale Oval, to coincide with the annual Beat the Breakdown day (formally Glenn Browning Memorial Day) when the Gorillas will take to the field against the Parkes Boars.

We'd love to see you there! (And hopefully this walk will also bring on the rain...)

Let the training begin!
