Elevate Jorge Acevedo

Donation protected
In 1999 Jorge Acevedo was on the road to become a police officer. However, that dream came to an end the day after Christmas of that year. Jorge was in his car, stopped at an intersection near his house when he was shot multiple times and left for dead. Jorge believes this was an attempted car-jacking by gang members, but the case was never solved.

This tragedy left Jorge in a coma and completely paralyzed, but it did not break his spirit. After several months in a coma he woke up and after over a year of therapy was able to regain some of his speech and some movement to his legs and arms. He was left wheelchair bound, but refused to give up on his dream to be a part of law enforcement. Jorge became a volunteer with the Glendale Police Department in November of 2001. Jorge truly defined service for others by volunteering at the police department as well as Glendale Community College and even as the president of the Disabled Access Appeals Commission for the City of Los Angeles. He has become a true inspiration for everyone he meets, as he zips around in his motorized wheelchair with a smile on his face.

Unfortunately, Jorge’s hardships did not end there. In June of last year he suffered a stroke as a result of his injuries. This stroke left him almost completely immobile and unable to talk. But Jorge being Jorge refused to give up. He has been going to therapy for the past year and desperately wants to come back to work. The problem is that his house is not designed for wheelchair access. The Glendale Police Department held several fundraisers which allowed Jorge to begin work on a wheelchair lift. This lift would allow Jorge the freedom to come and go from his house, without his mom having to carry him down the stairs.

In an attempt to raise the remaining funds needed ($8,000.00) the Glendale Police Department will be getting a bit grubby. For the month of July all personnel will be allowed to grow beards as long as they donate $50.00 to the cause. This is a little unconventional, especially for uniformed officers, but it will be a great way to get the word out about Jorge and to raise money.

This a great opportunity for all of us to come together for someone that is truly an inspiration to all of us. Please use this as an opportunity to help spread the word to the community. Everyone/anyone can donate.
