A Playground for Our School!

Beacon Hill International School needs a playground!
Monkey bars, slides, jumping, and climbing. Not only is it fun, but it's needed for kids' physical, mental, and social health.
Sadly, our school's 40-year-old playground finally broke beyond repair, leaving our students with blacktop, wood chips, and a couple basketball hoops for recess. The under-funded school district has indicated that it's uncertain if the playground structure will ever be replaced, and that if it is, it won't be any time soon.
Our only option for providing our kids with this developmentally-important equipment is to fundraise the replacement cost. However, our school - a state-designated "high poverty" school - and our community simply do not have to means to provide the required $75,000+ all by ourselves. So, we are applying for grants and asking you, our family, our friends, our co-workers, and our extended community to help us raise the needed funds. (Even if we get the grants, they still all require that we contribute thousands of dollars as well.) $75,000 is the estimated minimum we need to cover the purchase a basic play structure, removal of wood chips, fixing foundation issues (just under the play structure area), installation, and insurance. If we raise extra money, we would love to make foundation and surface repairs to the entire play area and make other improvements to make the area more enriching and welcoming both to our students and to all community members.
We are perhaps not rich in the typical sense, but we are a community rich in culture and diversity. BHIS has about 440 kids in K-5 and our student population is 28% Asian, 6% African American or Black, 15% Caucasian, 38% Hispanic, 0.01% Native American, 12% Multi Racial, and 60% qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch. Many families are recent immigrants. Families at our school speak 18 languages! Our school focuses on providing an inclusive, globally-oriented education and offers three language options: Spanish-immersion, Mandarin-immersion, and all-day English.
Our playground is used not only by the children in our school, but is open to everyone during non-school hours and is a safe, welcoming place for families to gather and socialize. Clearly, our neighborhood is extremely diverse, and the school provides one of the strongest forces that pulls the community together.
Numerous studies have shown that physical play and skill development is critical to mental and social development, learning, and attention. Many of our students get most of their physical, mental, and social development opportunities at school. The effects of a lack of adequate play opportunities will extend far beyond just recess.
Please help us let our kids be kids!

El 60% califican para “Free and Reduced Lunch” (Almuerzo Gratis o Reducido). En la comunidad hay muchas familias inmigrantes. ¡Las familias de nuestra escuela hablan 18 idiomas! Nuestra escuela enfoca en un entorno inclusivo, educación internacionalmente-orientada y ofrece tres programas de inmersión lingüística: Español, Chino, e Ingles.
La área de recreo estará disponible para todo el mundo fuera de las horas escolares y ofrece un lugar seguro y acogedor en donde las familias vecinas pueden disfrutar en comunidad.
Varios estudios muestran que actividades físicas en grupo y el desarrollo de habilidades físicas son criticas para el aprendizaje, la atención, y el desarrollo mental y social. Muchos de nuestros estudiantes obtienen en la escuela las oportunidades para desarrollo físico, mental, y social. Al no tener espacio de recreación, los efectos negativos de la falta de juego tendrán impacto mas allá del receso.
