The ancient city of Tell el-Amarna, located 300km south of Cairo, is under permanent threat from modern building and agricultural activity. In consequence, the Amarna Project is excavating and reconstructing the city's most important ceremonial building: The Great Aten Temple .

Alongside our ongoing excavations on behalf of the Amarna Project, we are replacing the stones removed after the abandonment of the city with small, local limestone blocks, topped with larger ones from the famous Tura quarries near Cairo, making the building outlines visible.
The focus of the 2021 Autumn season is the continued reconstruction of the north wall of the long stone temple, topping the small limestone blocks in the foundation trench with talatat-sized limestone blocks (see update from the 14 August 2021).
