We’re a bay area group that puts on bi-annual secular Solstice celebrations: one in the winter, and one in the summer.
For the last 6 years, we’ve come together every winter to remember the light of human progress, even as we acknowledge the dark enormity of the realities humanity faces. We’ve sung, we’ve spoken, we’ve cried; we’ve celebrated the heroism of truth-seeking and unflinchingly striving towards a better future, and we’ve mourned the death and everyday suffering that tells us we haven’t yet come far enough.
For the last 2 years, we’ve come together every summer, to channel and inspire the creativity and vitality of ourselves and those around us. We’ve shared food and played games, and challenged each other to ever higher heights: both figuratively, and with the help of a literal trampoline.
These holidays give ourselves, adjacent communities, and interested others an excuse to come together and celebrate things that matter to all of us. However, in order to keep the traditions of these events alive, we need some more meaningful fundraising. These events require space rental, supply purchase, and in some cases, permitting and insurance, and while we can raise some of that money via ticket fees, we want to give people who can afford to give more an opportunity to do so, so that we can be more accommodating of people who have fewer financial resources to leverage.
This fundraiser's first priority is to combine with ticket costs to cover the expenses of this year's Winter Solstice. Once that is funded, any further cash in this fund goes towards improving next year's Summer Solstice.
We know that there are always ways we could push ourselves and these events to be better, and this money will help us take those next steps.
