Bashir's Medical Hardship Fund

$15,491 of $22,000 goal

Raised by 162 people in 4 months
We are asking all individuals who have been positively impacted by Bashir and his restaurant, Bashir's Taverna, to please consider donating to his cause during a challenging time for him and his family.

Bashir has chronic knee problems and is in need of double knee replacement. He is scheduled for surgery on October 9th.  As it stands, him and his wife, Kathy, do not have sufficient funds to pay for this surgery as well as keep the restaurant operational, which is their only source of income.

Bashir will be out of work recovering from his surgery, leaving his 74 year old wife to operate the restaurant completely alone. Kathy is also in need of surgery on her hands which is not an option at this time. There is uncertainty for them as they struggle to provide for their many needs.

Bashir's is a mom and pop Downtown Mall treasure, a special taste of authentic mediterranean food coming from the hands of two people who came to America for a better life.

Kathy, born in Hungary, and Bashir, born in Algeria, are both immigrants and stand for the diversity that this country truly represents.

Despite their current hardships and their outdoor patio and signs being vandalized multiple times in the past couple of months, they continue to press on. They have always been there when others have needed help.

Bashir's is a symbol of hope and unity during a time of restless division and it deserves to be preserved. If you would like to show your support for them please consider a gift to help them at this time.

Thanks so much for all of the encouraging words and support for Bashir and Kathy. It has really lifted their spirits. I was able to give them almost $7,000 recently from funds raised. Bashir has been going to the restaurant and doing what he can there to help Kathy. He is using a cane and experiencing a fair amount of pain unfortunately in both of his knees. It's a bit of a struggle to balance standing and moving around in the kitchen while trying not to overdo it. He continues to attend his physical therapy sessions where he is always very sociable. Kathy is feeling quite tired and drained so your support is so encouraging. They also really appreciate all of you who have come by the restaurant to greet them in person. Please continue to send them encouraging messages as they determine the best plans for moving forward. Thank you so much Charlottesville!

Hello Friends,
Bashir has graduated from his walker to a cane and has been released by Dr. Swanson to go to the restaurant as long as he takes it easy. He is very happy and anxious to be back. This is the first milestone in the recovery process. He wants to thank everyone again for their generosity and support and deep concern for both himself and Kathy. He hopes to see you at Bashir's Taverna to thank you in person.

Dear Friends, Bashir and his family are truly overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of support and generosity from the community. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! It is a humbling experience to ask for help and Kathy and Bashir have always been strong , independent people both of whom have lived through and survived wars as children.

As their daughter, I know the full extent of their challenging circumstances and therefore I am going to increase the gofundme goal thanks to the generosity of their friends. It is difficult to put a number on the goal but as I am aware of the challenges looming ahead I am advocating for them. I can guarantee that any amount that surpasses the goals we set will be utilized to provide for their long term needs.

The $12,000 that has been raised so far is going to cover their immediate needs including the many pre and post op medical expenses and current physical therapy. Before surgery could be performed Bashir had to pass many medical tests from cardiology exams to required extensive dental repairs.

The money also needs to cover the loss of revenue that the restaurant is experiencing from the decreased hours and days they are able to be open while Bashir is recovering. I was able to give Kathy, my mom, $4,700 yesterday that was made available from gofundme. I set up the account in my name to make it easier for them so I am personally distributing the funds to them as they become available and are released, according to the gofundme policies they have in place.

I know that Kathy and Bashir have so many needs facing them that must be addressed in the near future including surgery on both of Kathy's hands and further surgery for Bashir. It is unclear when he will be released to be able to work again.

For those who have already donated, we can not thank you enough for supporting this cause. For those of you who have not yet donated but would like to donate, there is still ample opportunity to do so. The restaurant is Bashir and Kathy's entire livelihood. They have poured their hearts and souls into this business and community for the past two decades. Even though they have hit hard times, they are determined to persevere through the uncertainty with the gracious help of those that they have loved and served.

With a full heart of gratitude,
Andrea (and on behalf of Bashir and Kathy)

Bashir's surgery went well one week ago today. He is receiving daily home health care and physical therapy visits. We are happy he is staying with us during this time of rehabilitation. He is very grateful to all of you who have offered support and words of encouragement. Kathy is going to try and open the restaurant by herself this week and take it one day at a time. Thank you so much for your support and for getting the word out about their ongoing need.
