Baruch College: The Last Five Years
Donation protected
We are a small but determined group of students who need funding to bring a completely student-run production of The Last Five Years to Baruch College this fall semester. With our show, we hope to breathe life into the Baruch theater scene and give students the opportunity to design, direct, and perform an energized contemporary musical.
What is The Last Five Years?
The Last Five Years is a musical written by Jason Robert Brown that explores a five-year relationship between Cathy Hiatt (a struggling actress) and Jamie Wellerstein (a rising novelist) as they deal with love, success, and insecurity as a young couple trying to make it in New York City.
Why bring a musical to Baruch?
Although Baruch College is primarily a business school, the Bearcat theater community has come to life more than ever before. While the Fine and Performing Arts Department puts on a play each fall, the resounding success of the first department-run musical in nearly two decades during the 2016 spring semester proved that Baruch students crave more theater productions.
While the FPA shows are the cornerstones of the Baruch theater scene, opportunities for students to get involved in crucial roles (directing, stage managing, musical directing, to name a few) are limited, if not nonexistent.
What do you hope to accomplish?
With this production, we want to take ownership as students to create new theatrical opportunities while showcasing Jason Robert Brown’s energetic and intimate score. By highlighting the youth and anxieties of the musical, we seek to connect with a college-age audience and make theater a more accessible art form. We want to further the budding "Performing Arts Renaissance" by giving theater a permanent home at Baruch.
How will my donation be used?
Putting on a show — even our student-run, two-actor production — is expensive. Approximately 2/3 of your donations will be used to pay for the rights of the show and renting the performance space. Every penny donated after that will be used to bring Jamie and Cathy to life by building a homey, living room-style set, investing in proper sound and light equipment, and buying props.
Every dollar helps, no matter what amount you choose to donate, so please consider helping us bring this production to life!
