 CALL FOR HUMANITARIAN SUPPORT

Nepal experienced incessant rainfall for three days since 11 August 2017 which caused large-scale inundation in the Terai – southern part of the country bordering India – and a number of landslides in the Hill areas. Many parts of the Terai experienced torrential rain, causing rivers in most of the watershed areas (Babai, West Rapti, Narayani, Bagmati, Koshi and Kankai) to approach or cross the danger level. A total 35 districts were affected by the floods, inundation and landslides. (See map below).

As of 19 August, 2017 the districts with the highest numbers of people affected by the floods are; Saptari, Rautahat, Mahottari, Siraha, Baridya, Sunsari, Banke, Chitwan, Morang, Sarlahi, Kailali and Jhapa. Across all affected districts, 133 lives were lost; 27 are missing and 87,612 families have been displaced.

· Following the floods, there are significant concerns about the possibility of disease outbreaks, with affected people facing challenges in accessing adequate health care.

· Flood waters are receding, however, with access improving and a better understanding of the impact and damage caused by the floods, the overall number of affected people continues to rise.

· Initial reports suggest that the crops worth tens of millions of dollars have been destroyed and nearly 70,000 livestock have perished. Additionally, over 500 industries, both large and small, have been shut down.

· The Government of Nepal has taken the lead in the rescue, relief and response, and is appealing assistance from friendly Governments, organizations and interested individuals.

· Initial Rapid Assessments are being conducted in all affected districts, with results expected in the coming days; until then there are still gaps in understanding impact and current priority needs.

· According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, water levels in major river basins are now below ‘warning level', nevertheless, there is still the possibility of floods in western, central and eastern regions.

How your donations will support those in need!!

Bardiya
is one of the most affected and least reached areas and needs desperate help from fellow citizens and helping hands alike. We might not be able to reach all of the affected areas, but we can certainly support the relief program by lending a hand to one of the most affected districts, Bardiya.
We are starting small with just 3000 Euros for a start and aim to help 100 families with support items like Ready to eat food, hygiene items (toothbrush, paste, sanitary pads, soaps etc), and medical items.

A tentative amount of Rs. 3500 (29.1 Euros) will be allocated to each family (4-5 members).

What will each family get?
