I need some white privilege!
I am writing you today to ask that you assist me in acquiring some white privilege. Although I have layered oppressions that have affected my ability to access my slice of the American Pie™, no issue has affected me more readily than my lack of white privilege. From being assumed to have "cheated" my way into programs for gifted children AND college (via affirmative action), to having my natural hair viewed as unprofessional amongst professional peers, to having people make negative assumptions about my competency level, interests, and job knowledge, to being viewed as naturally dangerous or threatening, my lack of white privilege has created numerous obstacles as I've struggled to successfully compete in a white dominated workforce. I am hoping that, through this campaign, I will begin to make some headway towards closing the gap that white privilege has created in my life.
In return for paying for my white privilege, I would love to give you some "black privilege" in return! Yes, it is difficult being a black person but there are some neat perks, as you will discover if you donate!
((For those of you interested to know how I came up with a dollar amount for white privilege the answer is less complex than you might think. As someone who has historically been classified by the United States government as a Black/African American woman, I've been earning anywhere from 63-69% of what a white man makes for the same work since I entered the workforce in 1999. Even if I control for part-time work as a teenager and consider increases in pay as I grew older/more experienced and changed my field, that still averages out to about a $9000 deficit for each year I've been employed. Multiply that by 15 years of hustle and you have my total.))
I just want to write a brief note with some updates but more importantly a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the folks who have both supported or even just commented on my humble fundraising page. It was one of my intentions to find a way to foster dialogue about a serious issue in a light-hearted way and you all have given me faith that this is more possible than I could have imagined.
In the interest of continuing in that vein, this twitter was started https://twitter.com/yayaswhitepriv
I am also working on plans to deliver all of these lovely "black privileges" to you all in a manner that may very well end racial tensions as we know them (more on that later). So please do stay tuned!
A hearty thanks is also in order for those individuals who took time out of their day to do everything from providing politely misinformed disagreements to spewing vitriolic hatred at someone you've never even met. I thank you most of all for showing me that 1) you can not only have so much privilege that you believe everything you think is so relevant that it simply MUST be posted here, right now, for the world to see but your privilege also provides you plenty of time to spread your snugly little rage blankets across the internets whenever someone points out said privilege. Hopefully, sometime soon, I will also have enough privilege to spend prime daytime working hours harassing strangers. Although, to be perfectly honest, I'd probably just waste it looking at cat videos.
However, just because I like you, and because I'd hate to see you die alone in your apartments surrounded by only your indignant loathing and a dozen or so equally morose cats, I offer you the free gift of the following article, no donation required: http://thefeministbreeder.com/explaining-white-privilege-broke-white-person/
white privilege? I have heard that term a lot through the years, and now I get to tell a story of black privilege. I grew up in a neighborhood that was very mixed. We all hung out and got along. we had bonfires in our backyard (which in NYC is illegal, but dad felt that having all the neighborhood kids making smores in the backyard was better than all of us hopping fences and getting into trouble). As the years went on the neighborhood changed. My son, who was white, ended being one of 6 white kids in his elementary school. A school with over 1000 kids. In first grade, at 6 years old, he was beaten up by a 12 year old, 6th grader, who happened to be black. Why? because my son was white. When we met at the principal's office, with me driving up in my 1976 rusted out chevy van, and the other mother driving up in her brand new Nissan, with all her gold jewelry (me with no jewelry because who the heck can afford that when you are a single mom trying to put food on the table). I had this woman yell at me about how my people (my grandparents came over to the US in the 1920's through 1940's - as dirt poor migrants from Ireland - my grandmother was a maid- and fled Nazi Germany - my other grandmother's mother was put to death by the Nazis as an undesirable due to her being hospitalized for manic depression) kept her people in chains, as an excuse for her 12 year old engaging in this bad conduct. And to top it all off, the white principal agreed with this mother that her 12 year old's conduct was a result of the oppression of black people and did nothing to the 12 year old I, all by myself apparently, was oppressing her people. Needless to say, it was no longer safe for us in the neighborhood I grew up in, all because we were white. But I had NOWHERE to go. As if the very idea that we were white gave every black person in the neighborhood the right to declare us the enemy. I could not go into a grocery store without being accosted verbally or physically. I had to drive my son to school in my beat up old car because on the school bus he was a target. So spare me the ridiculousness of the idea of white privilege. Second story, a young Haitian family three houses down - the oldest daughter was doing well in school, really well, she was in a national math competition...her head was kicked in by about 10 other black girls for "being white". All her mother wanted was for her and her brother to do well in school and be able to get out of the neighborhood and move up in the world. Instead her daughter had to miss a year of school to recover from the beating she took for "being white". And this is where the problem lies, isn't it? Excuse bad conduct by black youths based on a ridiculous notion of oppression, when all poor people are tramped on and oppressed. Abuse someone who is black who is working hard to be better, simply because they appear to be "acting white" - what the heck is "acting white" getting an education, wanting to move out of a poor violent neighborhood, not wanting to be a member of a gang? It's just privilege, and if you happen to be born into privilege, or make your privilege off the backs of others, black or white, you are better off than everyone else. Do you think that Oprah, Sean Combs, Jesse jackson or Al Sharpton or anyone in the black upper class is going to support a poor black person, much less a poor white person, unless it would benefit them? Do you think if you had white privilege you could join Jack and Jill of America, or The Links - Nope, not even white privilege will get you into these groups, since you have to be a historically rich black family or the Black Bourgeoisie, and have debutante balls and cotillions, go on ski trips etc...Members of these families and the Black bourgeoisie (and even people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson) have actively sought and successfully engaged in practices which served to intentionally upend movements of the Black working poor. So get off your high horse and fix your community first. Stop using excuses, and get to work. Dr. Ben Carson's mother did not allow excuses and that is why he and his brother are where they are today. Not because someone gave them a hand up, but because they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and did it for themselves. And didn't allow the "you are acting white" stigma from other blacks to stop them in their pursuit of education. Clean up the black community, stop accepting excuses, hold people accountable for their actions and then there will not be any more excuses for why you think there is white privilege.
Aside from the blatant ignorance that everyone else pointed out for me, this page is exactly why crowd source funding is a failure. Also this page is more than likely violating the terms of GoFundMe. As I am looking at these perks for donating it is more than obvious you PERSONALLY are going to dress up as a cop and harass someone who payed you 250 dollars, no less will you even talk to them on facebook as a 5 dollar perk. This whole thing is a scam and I did make an attempt to report you but it seems as if GoFundMe only supports reporting for things that break the law which sadly you are not. Also need this not be said but this whole page is doing nothing but promoting racism. Do you know how many "privileged" men died for you to end slavery? over 660 THOUSAND people from just the civil war alone. Also the death of a president, countless beatings and incarcerations of men and women both black and white, and a mass protest ran by a peaceful activist who goes by the name Martin Luther King, maybe you've heard of him? He spoke of Blacks and Whites living together in unity. Blaming YOUR INDIVIDUAL PROBLEMS on another race is fundamentally opposite of King's ideology. If he were alive today, he would frown upon you. He would frown upon you, and everyone who supports you. If anyone who reads this wants to disagree, feel free to PM on Facebook, I'd be happy to engage in a debate and hopefully clear your mind of hatred.
Seriously, no offense meant here, but it is amazing and kind of curious to me that this "cause" has raised almost $6,000 and I can't get a penny to help my parents keep their home. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Because honestly, it seems to me that this is almost a joke since there is no real reason for a need of donations listed, other than "privilege" which can not really be bought. And please, no one take what I am saying wrong because I am NOT taking about the race issue that everyone else is going nuts about. All I mean is here is someone asking for money just to have money and people are handing it over left and right. Is it because it's humorous? Or are the donors mainly friends and family? I'm asking because I really need to know how to make my own page a success and if any on this site are, it's this one. Thanks and good luck with the rest of yours :)
This whole thing sickens me!!! Racism is alive still because of people like this continuing it!! White people are blamed for things White people did years ago, or what one white person did, all white people get blamed! That is like saying all Black people are criminals, liars, cheaters etc! You can not lump one race into one being all the same because of what some might do!! Racism is never going to die when you have people that support things like this!! By the way Black people are not paid lower then White people, and if you are and you know for a fact, guess what you have a huge law suit! So why not fight the ones that are racist black and white instead of punishing everyone that is black or everyone that is white!!! This is just so sad that people think like this now a days! I am so glad that my kids are being raised to not notice a color!! My son is in a school that is primary black... but he does not see that, he sees friends!! Grow up and stop racism with one person at a time.. and if someone is so closed minded that they can not see then don't waste your time or your feelings trying to change that person... 2 WRONGS do not make a RIGHT!!
yes i forgot about my white privilege. let me go pick that up next time i'm not delivering pizzas or sleeping in my fucking 8x14 trailer... you don't deserve a single cent let alone 6 grand. if i were in charge of gofundme you wouldn't get a fucking dime from this racist shit.
I'm overdosing on the irony from all the white people commenting about racism in the same sentence as assuming the donors have EBT cards, and that anyone who disagrees with them is on some magical list receiving free stuff. Their ignorance is its own punishment, but I sincerely wish it were physically painful. Rock on, Sisterlicious Yaya! I'm loving the social commentary and you're my hero.
You are FANTASTIC. If your campaign hadn't made a single dollar, you already did a world of good. Look at these comments. Just look at them. This is what black America faces daily. Sure, some of these people are only lashing out due to feeling protected by the relative anonymity of the internet, but there are plenty of people willing to dish out heaping helpings of hatred to people of color on the street. Every single day. Thank you for helping bring a serious issue to light with satire...and using that light to expose what lies beneath the seedy underbelly of our country. Signed, Chris Kelley a very caucasian friend
These comments..they make me laugh to keep from crying. Dear white people and white people sympathisers: white privilege doesn't mean that you never experience being broke or down on your luck. It means that when you meet with a supervisor, they're more than likely going to be the same race as you. It means that you never have to look for representations of yourselves in the mainstream media. It means that if you're ever seen doing something that may be considered "suspicious", you're usually given the benefit of the doubt. Of course, if you're on the lower end of the income scale, it varies a bit, but you're still guaranteed to be treated better than a poor black person. Also; black privilege is not a thing, just like reverse racism is not a thing.
