Hi, my name is Freya.  I am going to be walking the entire 268 miles of the Pennine Way (otherwise known as the 'Backbone of Britain') to raise awareness of Scoliosis and funds for charities that support research and patients in this area - the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Charity and the Scoliosis Campaign Fund.  The event will last 19 days, and starts on International Scoliosis Awareness Day, 30th June 2019.  You are more than welcome to join me for this event, whether you walk with me for a day, a week or the whole thing!  Continue reading for more details about my personal story and the charities supported by this event, or check out my event website for more information.

I was diagnosed with Scoliosis at the age of 11, and had corrective surgery less than a year later.  Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine which, if left untreated, can lead to a reduced chest cavity and lung capacity, muscle pain and usually has an effect on bodily appearance.  My operation lasted 7 hours and involved inserting a titanium rod and 4 screws to keep my back straight.  Now, 8 years on, I lead a normal life and have no problems whatsoever!

The RNOH Charity raises money to help the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore provide world-class care for patients with musculoskeletal conditions, and to support the hospital's pioneering work in orthopaedic research and education.  This is where I had my surgery, making it a very special charity to me.

The Scoliosis Campaign Fund is a joint fundraising venture between the British Scoliosis Research Foundation (BSRF), who fund research into the causes and treatment  of Scoliosis, and the Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK), a patient support charity.

The main purpose for the Back the Back Walk is to raise awareness for Scoliosis, and to get people talking about it.  The more people know about it, the easier it can be recognised, therefore the faster it can be treated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, it really means a lot to me!
