Mark and Rebecca Bonis, already proud parents of twin 5 year old girls, welcomed their son, Marc Robert Bonis, 4lbs 3 oz, into this world on June 11, 2018.
Baby Marc was born with a rare birth defect called an omphalocele. An omphalocele is a congenital condition where the abdominal organs do not return from the umbilical cord during fetal development. His intestines, stomach and liver are growing outside of his body, covered by a membrane. This will require many surgeries, and an unforeseen amount of time spent in the NICU, until doctors authorize his release.
Even with this his birth abnormality, baby Marc was born with a smile on his face! He is a fighter, just like his parents!
Once Marc is able to come home to his loving family, he will require around the clock home care since he will not be able to attend a regular daycare. The cost for this is unknown to Mark and Rebecca.
Another setback happened for the family when Rebecca’s water broke at 30 weeks. Every minute of every day for four weeks, Rebecca and Mark lived with the constant fear of not knowing if their precious baby would survive. Through the grace of God, Rebecca’s strength, and ever optimistic attitude, she made it to 34 weeks (the goal that her doctors had set).
This time spent in the hospital has cut into her maternity leave, which will leave her short after baby Marc will be released from NICU.
Hospital bills are unknown, and with his condition, he will need a specialized car seat and other medical necessities that make these costs unpredictable.
The immediate goal for Baby Marc is the gradual reduction of the omphalocele by enlarging the abdominal cavity to accommodate the intestinal contents, stomach and liver. Marc will need a number of surgeries to reinstate the internal organs and closure of his abdomen.
Mark and Rebecca’s undying love for their son will undoubtedly help them in the upcoming difficult months and years.
