AZTECH Robotics World Competition

Corona Del Sol’s FRC Team 6479, AZTECH Robotics, is a third-year FIRST Robotics Team from Tempe, Arizona. Every year, FRC teams spend six weeks designing, fabricating, programming, testing, and driving a robot to compete in the FIRST

Robotics Competition. In the process, we introduce high school students to engineering concepts, teach teamwork skills, and foster an environment where math, science, and technology application are paired with friendly competition.


We were given this year’s challenge on January 5th to design, build, and program a robot that could complete the challenge based on this year’s Deep Space theme. We spent 6 weeks tirelessly preparing our robot for competition. We spent an additional 6 weeks building a practice robot and enhancing our design. On Thursday, April 4th we began this year’s Arizona West Regional by engaging in practice matches in which we identified and fixed many of the flaws of our robot. Friday, April 5th the competition began and we almost immediately jumped to 3rd place with our innovative design and skilled driver. We also won the Creativity Award sponsored by Xerox for our robot design!


Saturday, April 6th started out with a few challenges, however we were able to persevere and overcome those challenges and went on to place in the top 8 out of 42 teams. We then strategically used data our scouts gathered on other teams to assemble an alliance of optimal teams. After several close tiebreaker matches, we were able to win the regional!

           

Now our second challenge begins, we have less than two weeks to assemble the funds to go to the FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas. The overall cost per student is $1557.50. We have determined that we will need at least 10 of our team members, and our dedicated advisor Stephen Heiser to be competitive in this higher level of competition. Ideally, we would like to bring 15 team members and two mentors. This is an entirely new world to us as this is out first time ever going, and for our seniors the only time they are able to go!  This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our team members.

The Arizona Tax Credit Program (A.R.S. 43-1089.01) allows any Arizona taxpayer to donate up

to $400* to a school of their choice in support of extracurricular programs and get their entire donation back in the form of a tax credit!

*Individuals and couples filing jointly may take advantage of this tax credit. A maximum of $200 can be deducted per individual tax return; couples filing a joint return may deduct a maximum of $400.

Arizona Department of Revenue Guidelines:

The credit is applied against the taxpayer’s state income taxes.

“Extracurricular activities” are defined as . . . “school-sponsored educational and recreational

activities that require enrolled students to pay a fee in order to participate.”

The credit is available for any personal income tax return. It is not a requirement that the taxpayer have a child enrolled in the public school.

The credit is limited to $200 per individual tax return and $400 if the credit is claimed on a tax

return of a married couple.
