¿Qué quién soy?
Para los que ya me conocen (amigos, familia, compañeros de trabajo...) soy Juan, más comúnmente conocido cariñosamente como Chuy.
Para los que no me conocen, soy un graduado en Psicología que actualmente se encuentra participando en una carrera de obstáculos económicos para llegar completar su sueño: estudiar un Máster y poder llegar a formar parte de la comunidad científica y, así, apoyar la investigación en beneficio a nuestra sociedad.
¿Cuál es mi historia?
Nacido en Cádiz, España, en 1991 y fascinado por todo lo relacionado con el cerebro, me embarqué en la aventura de estudiar Psicología en la Universidad de Sevilla. Tuve la oportunidad de estudiar dicha carrera gracias a la gran ayuda de mi padre, y aunque la situación económica era un tanto difícil, terminé exitosamente mis estudios universitarios. Durante estos años en la universidad (me atrevería a decir incluso los mejores años de mi vida) pude conocer mi vocación y recibí una beca de colaboración por mis buenos resultados académicos, la cual me permitió trabajar en el laboratorio de la universidad y a completar los pagos de mi matrícula. Incluso tuve la oportunidad de completar mis prácticas en la prisión de Sevilla I, desarrollando un programa de habilidades sociales con internos, el cual disfruté bastante. De esta experiencia aprendí "que no es oro todo lo que reluce y que lo que no reluce puede llegar a ser oro".
Sin embargo, "todo lo bueno llega a su fin" y una vez graduado me encontré ante ese abismo llamado <<mundo laboral>> y sus correspondientes crisis existenciales.
La situación económica y laboral no ayudaban para continuar con mis estudios, así que me vi forzado a moverme más allá de mi zona de confort y cruzar la frontera hacia Londres, Reino Unido. Mis objetivos eran los siguientes:
--> Trabajar y ahorrar para mi futuro académico, porque, al fin y al cabo quería seguir formándome y especializarme en Neurociencias.
---> Mejorar mi nivel de inglés, una habilidad que cada día es más necesaria para desarrollar una carrera profesional, sobre todo en el á
mbito científico.
En Londres conocí otras culturas, entendí el valor de las experiencias, aprendí a ser independiente, a lidiar con la soledad y, en definitiva, a vivir el momento. Intenté buscar algo relacionado con Psicología, pero el panorama no fue nada esperanzador: sin experiencia y sin Máster tus posibilidades de conseguir un trabajo cualificado en Psicología son más bien nulas. El coste de vida en la ciudad tampoco ayuda, así que empecé a trabajar en una cafetería, restaurantes, tiendas de ropa... todo con un objetivo: ahorrar y proseguir mis estudios. He de decir que de todos mis trabajos he aprendido muchísimo, que no todo se aprende en la escuela, y estoy muy agradecido a mis compañeros/as por hacer de esta experiencia tan especial.
Decidí que tenía que poner en marcha mi proyecto de vida y por ello solicité mi admisión en Alemania y Francia, pero debido a las pocas plazas ofertadas y a la gran demanda, no fui aceptado, lo que supuso un duro golpe. Aún así no me rendí y seguí intentándolo en otras universidades, hasta que finalmente fui contactado para una entrevista en la Vrije Universitat Amsterdam. La noche anterior a la entrevista apenas pude conciliar el sueño ya que suponía una gran oportunidad para mi y era una de la
s universidades que más me interesaban. La entrevista fue bastante bien y me sentí seguro y tranquilo. Tras una semana de espera y muchos nervios recibí finalmente una respuesta... ¡ FUI ADMITIDO EN EL MASTER DE NEUROCIENCIAS DE LA UNIVERSIDAD VRIJE DE AMSTERDAM!
¿Por qué necesito de vuestra colaboración?
Pero como ya dije...no es oro to
do lo que reluce.
Aunque muy emocionado ante mi admisión a dicho programa, me veo abrumado ante la posibilidad de no poder hacer frente a los costes académicos y de vida en Amsterdam. Sin embargo, si algo tengo claro es que este es mi sueño, lo que quiero hacer y, por ello, voy a hacer lo posible para conseguirlo. Además, dicen que la vida es para los valientes, ¿no?
Mi plan es utilizar el dinero que he estado ahorrando estos últimos años y buscarme un trabajo a tiempo parcial que pueda compaginar con las obligaciones académicas. Aún así, desafortunadamente, no es suficiente.
Los gastos a los que tendría que hacer frente para Septiembre son:
--> 2006€ de la matrícula del Máster por año (el Máster consiste en dos años).
--> 400€ para solicitar un servicio de asignación de habitación ofertado por la Universidad
--> Una vez seleccionada una habitación, 100€ de comisión y tres meses por adelantado como depósito, esto es, unos 1200€.
--> 400€ mensuales de alquiler.
--> 150€ mensuales en seguro médico, cuyo pago es obligatorio en Holanda.
--> 300€ de gastos en material
académico.
Agradecería cualquier tipo de ayuda, apoyo u orientación para hacer frente a estos gastos. Yo pondré de todo mi empeño para sacar esta aventura hacía adelante.
Por mi parte...
Esta oportunidad se me presenta como una de las más importantes de mi vida y no quiero dejarla escapar. La mayoría de estudiantes españoles de mi generación nos hemos encontrado ante la difícil situ
ación de aventurarnos hacia otros países en busca de unas mejores condiciones, saltando valientemente ante el abismo de lo desconocido, luchando con la frustración de no poder dedicarnos a lo que queremos y superándonos cada día un poco más. Somos una generación muy preparada y que trabajamos muy duro para mejorar nuestro futuro. Y yo formo parte de esta generación.
Mi objetivo en la vida es llegar a convertirme en docente y así contribuir a mejorar el panorama académico - científico en España, trabajando en las universidades para el apoyo de proyectos de investigación y brindar la educación de calidad y las oportunidades que nuestros jóvenes se merecen en nuestro país.
Otras de mis grandes pasiones es el dibujo y por ello me gustaría sortear algunos de mis dibujos entre aquellos que colaboren como muestra de agradecimiento por su generosidad.

Who am I?
For those who already know me (friends, family, workmates...) I am Juan, more commonly known as Chuy.
For those who do not know me, I am a graduate in Psychology who is currently participating in a race of economic obstacles to get to fulfill his dream: study a Master degree and become part of the scientific community and, thus, to support the research in benefit to our society
What is my story?
I was born in Cádiz, Spain, in 1991. Fascinated by everything related to the brain, I embarked on the adventure of studying Psychology at the University of Seville. I had the opportunity to study this career thanks to the great help of my father, and even though the economic situation was somewhat difficult, I successfully completed my university studies. During these years (I would even say the best years of my life), I got to know my vocation and I received a collaboration scholarship for my good academic results. This scholarship allowed me to work a great deal in the laboratory of my university and to complete the payments of my tuition. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to complete my internship in the prison of Seville I, where I developed a program of social skills with inmates. I really enjoyed this experience and I learned that "all that glitters is not gold and what does not glitter can become gold".
However, "all good things come to an end" and once I graduated I found myself facing that abyss called <<working world>> and its corresponding existential crisis.
The economic and work situation did not help to continue with my studies so I decided to move beyond my comfort zone and crossed the border to London, UK. My targets were clear:
--> Work and save for my academic future, because after all, I wanted to continue to train and specialize in Neuroscience.
--> Improve my level of English, an ability that is nowadays more necessary to develop a professional career, especially in the scientific field.
In London, I met other cultures, I understood the values of the experiences, I learned to be independent, to cope with the loneliness and live the moment. I tried to look for a job related to Psychology, but the picture was not encouraging at all: without experience and without Master, your chances of getting a qualified job in Psychology are rather zero. The cost of living in the city does not help, so I started working in a cafe, restaurants, clothing stores... with a goal in mind, save money and continue my studies. I have to say that I have learned a lot from my jobs, that there are things that you cannot learn at university and I am really grateful to my colleagues for making this experience very special.
I decided that I had to start my life project, that I was at standstill, so I requested my admission in Germany and France. Due to the few offered vacancies and the great demand, I was not admitted. That was a heavy blow for me. Even so, I did not give up and I keep trying in other universities. Finally, I was contacted for an interview at the Vrije Universitat Amsterdam. The night before the interview, I could hardly fall asleep since it was a great opportunity for me and was one of the universities that interested me the most. The interview went quite well and I felt confident and calm. After a week of waiting and feeling really nervous, I received an answer... I WAS ACCEPTED IN THE NEUROSCIENCE PROGRAMME OF THE VRIJE UNIVERSITY AMSTERDAM!
Why do I need your help?
As I said before... "all that glitters is not gold".
Although I am really happy for my admission to this Master, I am overwhelmed by the possibility of failing to meet the academic and living costs in Amsterdam. However, this is my dream, what I want to do and, therefore, I will do my best to get it. Furthermore, it is said that life is for the brave.
My plan is to use my savings and find a part-time job in Amsterdam which I can combine with my academic obligations. Even so, It is unfortunately enough.
The expenses that I will have to face for September are:
--> 2006€ of tuition fees per year (the Master consists in two years).
--> 400€ of housing service offered by the University to assign you a room, due to the difficulty to find a room in Amsterdam.
--> Once the room is assigned, 100€ fees and three months in advance, that is about 1200€.
--> 400€ monthly rent.
--> 150€ monthly in health insurance, which is obligatory in Netherlands.
--> 300€ on academic material.
I would be really grateful for any kind of help, support or guidance to face these costs. I will put all my efforts to bring this adventure forward.
For my part...
This opportunity is one of the most important in my life and I do not want to let it go. The majority of the Spanish students of my generation have found ourselves facing the difficult situation of venturing to other countries in the pursuing of better conditions, jumping bravely into the abyss of the unknown, struggling with the frustration of not being able to be what we desire and surpassing ourselves day after day. We are a very qualified generation that works hard to makes this world a better place. And I am part of this generation.
My goal in life is to become an academic and thus fight to improve the academic-scientific situation in Spain, working in the universities to support research projects and provide the quality education and opportunities that young people deserve.
Another of my great passions is drawing and, for that, I would like to offer some of my drawings among those who collaborate as a sign of gratitude for their generosity.
Any extra amount raised will be used to fund projects supported by Precipita, the first public platform in Spain for collective funding (crowdfunding) for research projects. This platform is managed by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), https://www.precipita.es/.
