Actors' Warehouse: USA to Monaco

Donation protected
The Actors’ Warehouse is proud to announce that after a rigorous selection process, it has been invited to represent the United States at the Mondial du Théâtre in Monaco. Yes, Bond fans, we'll be in Monte Carlo from Aug. 21-30, 2017. Actors’ Warehouse is the only company selected to represent the United States during the ten-day event, and we're asking for your support.

Since Actors’ Warehouse received its invitation to Mondial du Théâtre, it has been diligently planning fundraising events. The goal is to raise at least $25,000 to cover the costs of a four-person cast and crew.

During this 10-day international event, participants will have the opportunity to participate in performances, colloquia, and workshops which enable the various troupes to compare their theatrical techniques. The cast and crew of four are fortunate to be the Festival's guest for 4 days with meals and lodging included. However, in order to take advantage of the remaining festival experience, we need the support of generous donors like yourself.

Mondial du Théâtre, also known as the World Festival of Amateur Theatre, is the premier festival in the world celebrating amateur and community theater. Founded in 1957 by Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco, this prestigious world theater festival is held every four years; 2017 marks the 14th edition.

Actors’ Warehouse will present the South African play entitled “Tshepang” (say-pang) by Lara Foot. “Tshepang,” inspired by a true story of unspeakable violence, wrestles with the difficult subject matter of child abuse, violence, alcoholism, disempowerment, and poverty. It is, according to Lara Foot, “Based on twenty thousand true stories.”

“Tshepang” stars Steven H. Butler as Simon and Mandisa Haarhoff as Ruth. The multi-talented Mr. Butler is also the Actors’ Warehouse’s Artistic and Executive Director. In the role of storyteller, he infuses Simon with enthusiasm, compassion, and genuineness, conscientiously shepherding the audience through an experience that would otherwise be unendurable. Ruth is played by Ms. Haarhoff, who is able to convey the suffering, courage, resolve and purity of Ruth, all the while in a state of unadulterated silence. Ms. Haarhoff is a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Florida. Under the direction of Jan Cohen, “Tshepang” made its U.S. premiere on the Actors’ Warehouse stage in 2014 and since then “Tshepang” and Actors’ Warehouse have gained numerous recognitions.

The production of “Tshepang” won awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Community Play in the 2015 Florida Theatre Conference (FTC). Winning the award for Best Community Play allowed Actors’ Warehouse to represent the State of Florida at the 2016 Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) (a regional play competition) where it won awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Community Play.
