AVENGERS FOR AUTISM

THE CAUSE

I, Tamika Faulkner, created Pieces of Me, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to teens and young adults with autism, in dedication to my brother Timothy.

Under our SUPERHEROES UNITE INITIATIVE, which is dedicated to Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month is called Avengers for Autism. This was created once Marvel decided to release Avengers: Infinity War during Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month.

#AvengersforAutism was created to show that all people (children, teens, young adults, and adults) with Autism Spectrum Disorder have their own unique superpowers and in their own way,  are superheroes.

Pieces of Me, Inc. & forReza's goal is to send people ( of all ages) with autism to a sensory-friendly private screening of Avengers: Infinity War in Los Angeles, CA, Washington, DC, and Houston, TX on Sunday, April 29.

The deadline for reaching our goal is Thursday, April 26, 2018.

WHY CONTRIBUTE?
1. It shows that people who are different can change and save the world.

2. People with autism are different -just like superheroes - because their superpower is how they look at things through a different lens.

3. Most importantly, a lot of people do not understand or know what Autism is and people with autism are easily misunderstood. They do not get the attention that they deserve and I want to give back to the people who are underrepresented.

4. People with ASD should BE included and not tolerated.
5. THIS SCREENING IS SENSORY FRIENDLYLights Up  & Sound Down

Supporting this project means you support not only diversity but AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER. People with ASD NEED REPRESENTATION so that they can take pride in who they are and know that they are more than capable of being anything they put their minds to.
It is important that they understand that their disorder/disability should not hold them back and people are open to learning about their disorder and helping them achieve greatness!

ABOUT AUTISM
- Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3
- Autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction, communication skills, and cognitive function. Individuals with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities
- Individuals with autism often suffer from numerous co-morbid medical conditions which may include: allergies, asthma, epilepsy, digestive disorders, persistent viral infections, feeding disorders, sensory integration dysfunction, sleeping disorders, and more
- Autism is diagnosed four times more often in boys than girls. Its prevalence is not affected by race, region, or socioeconomic status. Since autism was first diagnosed in the U.S. the incidence has climbed to an alarming one in 68 children in the U.S.
- Autism itself does not affect life expectancy, however, research has shown that the mortality risk among individuals with autism is twice as high as the general population, in large part due to drowning and other accidents.
- Currently, there is no cure for autism, though, with early intervention and treatment, the diverse symptoms related to autism can be greatly improved and in some cases completely overcome.

AUTISM FACTS & STATS
- Autism now affects 1 in 68 children
- Boys are four times more likely to have autism than girls
- About 40% of children with autism do not speak.
- About 25%–30% of children with autism have some words at 12 to 18 months of age and then lose them. Others might speak, but not until later in childhood
- Autism greatly varies from person to person (no two people with autism are alike)
- The rate of autism has steadily grown over the last twenty years
- Comorbid conditions often associated with autism include Fragile X, allergies, asthma, epilepsy, bowel disease, gastrointestinal/digestive disorders, persistent viral infections, PANDAS, feeding disorders, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, ADHD, Tourette Syndrome, OCD, sensory integration dysfunction, sleeping disorders, immune disorders, autoimmune disorders, and neuroinflammation.
- Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disorder, yet most underfunded
- A 2008 Danish Study found that the mortality risk among those with autism was nearly twice that of the general population
- Children with autism do progress – early intervention is key
- Autism is treatable, not a hopeless condition

ABOUT PIECES OF ME, INC.
Pieces of Me, Inc was created in June of 2017 in dedication to the CEO/Founder, Tamika Faulkner’s brother, Timothy Faulkner, who was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and with ADHD 12-13 years ago. While Timothy was in middle school and transitioning to high school, she saw his social and educational skills were behind. After noticing his homework assignments, she noticed that schools are not helping teens and young adults on the Autism Spectrum to excel in and outside of the classroom.

About forReza Non-Profit Organization

forReza is dedicated to promoting solutions for underprivileged individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families: by providing support through educational and mentoring programs, increasing the availability of resources for children on the spectrum, and erasing the social stigma associated with ASD.

We offer parent support groups, supplying parents the tools and resources needed to better educate themselves about ASD, as well as how to create a safe learning environment for their children. Through this, we want to erase the social stigma associated with having a family member on the spectrum, especially in minority communities. Furthermore, we offer children support groups, bring leading educators and therapist in the field, to work with the children on their social and communication skills. Ultimately, we are working on a new communications app for people on the spectrum, which will be easily accessible for anyone to download for free.

forReza is acceptant anyone who needs assistance; no matter of your color, race, creed, sexuality, and religion. We are here to help.
